The Howard County Sheriff's Office has recently received several reports from citizens regarding a phone scam involving an individual claiming to be "Lt. Eric Davis" with the Howard County Jail.
In these calls, the scammer tells victims that a loved one is incarcerated and that COVID is spreading rapidly through the jail. The caller then offers to help secure the person's release by requesting money for a bond or other fees.
THIS IS A SCAM.
The Howard County Sheriff's Office will never call and request payment over the phone, through gift cards, electronic payment apps, cryptocurrency, or any other method to secure someone's release from jail.
Unfortunately, some individuals have already lost money to this scam.
If you receive a call like this:
• Do not send money.
• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Hang up immediately.
• Contact the Howard County Sheriff's Office directly to verify any information (765-457-1105).
Please share this post to help protect your family, friends, and neighbors from becoming victims.
If you believe you have been targeted by this scam or have already sent money, contact the Howard County Sheriff's Office as soon as possible.
Stay vigilant and help us spread the word.
