Rusty found this Bald-faced hornet's nest ( am I right?). They're not so friendly and we'd rather not share the attic with these guys. Rusty tamed the hornets with some lullabies and got the attic inspection done.

Last weekend, Amie and I were woken up at 2 am to hear a bear pounding on our neighbor's window, breaking it, and climbing into the house. Of course, I went outside to check things out and jumped back when the bear climbed back out in front of me. Do we need to start putting bars on our windows or what?

I really appreciate when I'm inspecting a relatively newer house and its just built right. No corners cut, sensible design, and impeccable construction. Having an experienced local builder matters. Period.

I've been crawling under homes as a home inspector for almost 12 years (I think). And every time I see these cast iron drain pipes with these letters I get nostalgic.

After my freshman year at Cal Poly SLO, I worked at AB&I, a family run cast iron foundry in a rather sketchy part of East Oakland. I worked ten hour shifts starting at 5 am and worked in every single department to learn how a foundry worked, since I thought I might go that route in my engineering career. I learned what hard work was from a mostly Mexican and Portuguese crew. They accepted me, shared their food with me, and looked out for me. I credit that summer with teaching me how to work through tough times.

Glad we caught this one before the deck collapsed. Several of the deck hangers and nails were corroded and falling apart. Using pressure-treated lumber is a great idea in some cases. But using the wrong metal hardware that's in contact with the chemical-filled wood will corrode it fast.

Always use a local licensed general contractor to build your deck, and get it engineered by a local licensed engineer.
