Winter Hush at Ethel’s
Yesterday morning on the drive into work, I made a couple turn-arounds.
I’d been wanting to stop at Ethel’s for a while — knowing that open window and the old CLOSED sign would sit just right.
The fresh snow made it perfect.
Ethel’s is one of those places that feels bigger than a food stand.
It’s a gathering spot.
Folks line up, talk, laugh, catch up while they wait.
I’ve done this same thing in cities too — places that were stuffier, cost a lot more, and honestly weren’t as tasty. This is not waiting an hour or more for a table. I appreciate those experiences… but Ethel’s is part of home.
Larry somehow remembers your name, your order, and your favorites after just a couple visits. He and his family keep it moving — quick, simple, and always good.
Some stay and eat.
Some grab and go.
But everybody leaves fed and a little happier.
Later in the morning Larry stopped by Keysville Auto Parts and we got to talking.
That open window in the photo?
Turns out it’s not supposed to be open — it’s broken, and has been for weeks.
Ethel’s is an old trailer — thin metal, piano hinges, old wiring — the kind of repair that needs real fabrication and welding on site.
So far, he hasn’t been able to find anyone to tackle it.
Larry and his family have taken care of this community for years — college kids, farmers, loggers, working folks… everybody.
Feels like maybe it’s our turn to help take care of them.
If you’re able to help with the repairs (or know someone who can), reach out to Larry — or message me and I’ll connect you.
Feel free to share this around.
People come from a long way for Ethel’s.
Let’s help keep the window open for the right reasons.
Peace and grease.
