Deck staining is not just about picking a color. Preparation and application make a huge difference in how the final result looks and how long it lasts.

A few important application tips straight from the guide:

• Wood moisture should be under 15% before staining
• Ideal application temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees
• Stir stain occasionally during application to keep pigments evenly mixed
• Protect surrounding concrete and landscaping from spills or overspray
• For decks, applicator pads are often recommended for the smoothest finish

And once you finish staining:

• Wipe down the deck within 1 hour to prevent tacky spots
• Use mineral spirits for cleanup
• Avoid walking on the deck for at least 24 to 48 hours
• Properly dry oily rags before disposal

One of the biggest mistakes people make is rushing prep or skipping application steps. A little extra time upfront can dramatically improve how evenly stain absorbs and how long your deck holds up.

Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend. It is a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy every day came at an incredible cost to countless families across generations.

We are deeply grateful to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to the families who continue to carry that loss.

From all of us at Tri City Lumber, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day as we pause to remember those who never made it home.
