Coyote Falls Forge

Coyote Falls Forge I'm Shawn Murphy, and this is my obsession. I make hand-forged, unique steel creations. Please allow appropriate forging time.

All pieces are forged to order on my anvil and available either on my Etsy shop or (in the case of blades) through direct sales.

The latest from the forge - an antler handled Bowie knife with a 9-1/2" blade. This one took about 30 hours of work, including the sheath, over the course of most of the weekends between mid-may and the 4th of July. Hand forged from 1075 high carbon spring steel. This was my very first time working with antler.

Some of the in-progress shots were posted a few weeks ago, but they're included here to show the whole timeline.

The last couple of weekends' progress...this is a commission for a large Bowie knife with a brass guard...and a whitetail antler crown handle. Yep, I bit off a lot with this one. But the basic forging is done, and I'll be moving on to blade grinding and beginning to work with the antler piece next. These photos cover about 4 hours of work, over the course of two afternoons.

The forge has been cold for a few weeks. The day job is taking all of my time - but man the OT pay has been nice! In a couple of weeks my schedule will go back to normal (and before that I'll take a few days off to recover) and I'll have a chance to forge to my heart's content. I can't wait.

Results and in-progress shots will be posted here, as usual.

Tonight a scammer did a Facebook "check in" at Coyote Falls Forge in an effort to make it look as if they represent me and that I am hiring.

This is a lie.

That account is a work-from-home scam.

Please remember, I am a one-man shop. This is a weekend hobby for me, and should I ever be in a position to hire anyone, I will announce it myself rather than allowing some random scammer on Facebook to do it for me.

I have reported the scammer and fully expect Facebook to notify me that their lies do not violate community standards. I encourage all of you to report "Remote Jobs" as well if you saw the scam "check in" post.

Thanks, everyone.

-Shawn

A philosophical musing that comes from a conversation with my wife's cousin...

A knife does not start out dull. In the case of the knives I make, they start out unformed, then eventually they have form but are unsharpened. From that unsharpened state they are refined, finished, and then honed to become sharp and useful.

"Dull" is a preventable state that a formerly sharp knife enters if it is not properly cared for.

The same can be said for human beings. Take good care of yourselves and stay sharp.

Had an itch to move some steel while I wait for the handle material for my next commission to arrive in the mail...so I started work on a little side project - a Scottish sgian dubh forged from a scrap piece of 1075. Not bad for an hour or so of work. Got quite a few hours of work left to do, though. This one will be the piece I pick up between projects.

Had to disappoint someone yesterday who wanted to order a knife for immediate delivery...because I don't have any ready-to-ship stock on hand.

I've updated my bio to reflect the fact that (especially in the case of knives) everything is forged to order - I rarely have any finished pieces that haven't been spoken for, so your desired item currently exists as a pristine bar of steel that is yet to be worked. Forged household items (hooks, etc) take a week, or longer for a large order - I do have my day job interfering with my forging time. A custom knife will take several weeks of weekend and evening work.

The upside of this is that everything I sell is made specifically for the person who requests it. That makes it possible to create variations, such as the coat hooks for the lady who wanted ball ends instead of scrolled ends, without adding time to the process.

Thanks for your understanding.

I had to wait before showing this one, because it was given as a Christmas present and I didn't want to risk ruining things for the giver and receiver. But...here it is. My first hidden-tang knife. Walnut handle, brass hardware, a G10 spacer, and hand-forged 1075 high carbon steel, with a leather sheath (featuring a belt clip) also made by me.
