Sweeping is the method used by Utility Locating professionals to locate all conductors in an area, rather than an individual line.

Step 1: Use the inductive method to apply the highest frequency possible – typically, all metallic underground conductors will carry signal.
Step 2: Walk in a grid pattern, sweeping in two perpendicular directions.
Step 3: When you get a response, stop sweeping, move the transmitter to that point and trace the conductor you’ve found out of the area of interest.
Step 4: Return to starting point and resume sweeping for more conductors.
Step 5: Finally, sweep again using passive power mode.
