Schonstedt is proud to support humanitarian demining efforts around the world.

We recently had the honor of seeing a Schonstedt GA-72Cd magnetic locator placed directly into the hands of those making a difference on the ground. Pictured here, Paul Heslop of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) presents the unit to Together, supporting their critical work in the detection and clearance of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Ukraine.

Through the Schonstedt Humanitarian Demining Initiative (SHDI), we are committed to equipping organizations with the tools they need to safely locate and remove explosive hazards—helping restore land, protect communities, and save lives.

We recently welcomed participants from Leadership Jefferson and Leadership Berkeley, sponsored by their local Chambers of Commerce, to our facility in Kearneysville, West Virginia, as part of their Economic Development program.

During the visit, the group toured our operations and learned how Schonstedt technology supports land surveyors, water and sewer departments, humanitarian demining teams, and others working in the field worldwide.

We also introduced Radiodetection, Schonstedt’s parent company, and its role in damage prevention, particularly how contract locators responding to 811 and "Call Before You Dig" tickets use Radiodetection precision locators to help identify, mark, and map buried utilities.

One conversation especially stood out. An attendee shared a personal connection to Schonstedt’s history through a relative involved in early detection work and recalled seeing our locators used in unexploded ordnance detection efforts in Palau. It was a meaningful reminder of the long history and real-world impact behind the work we do every day.

What's the difference between a Magnetic Locator and a Pipe & Cable Locator?

A Schonstedt magnetic locator identifies ferrous metal by measuring variations in the earth’s magnetic field. It does not use a transmitted signal and is used to locate buried iron and steel objects such as survey pins, valve boxes, manhole covers, and tanks.

A Schonstedt pipe & cable locator is used to locate and trace underground utilities by detecting electromagnetic signals. A transmitter can apply a signal to a target line for active locating, or a receiver can detect existing signals in passive mode. This approach is used in utility locating and supports damage prevention practices.

Understanding the difference helps ensure the right tool is used for the right application.

Customer Story:

"I love a good piece of technology. I had the chance to break out my metal detector to help a client on a project of mine. We’re looking to clean and repair a CMP culvert the original builder installed back in 1970.

The inflow and outflow of this culvert are buried in silt and in an active stream. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how we could locate the culvert. Then I remembered I had recently purchased the Schonstedt GA-92XTd and figured it was a great time to put it to the test.

Within 10 minutes I knew exactly where the inflow and outflow were and could develop a plan of how we are going to unclog this culvert!"

Thank you for sharing your experience and pictures, David Harris, EIT

Land surveyors often work across challenging terrain, carrying multiple tools to get the job done. In these conditions, portability and efficiency matter when locating property corners and pins.

Schonstedt magnetic locators are designed to help detect ferrous survey markers, supporting accurate and efficient fieldwork.

At the 29th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisors in Geneva, discussions focused on advancing the tools, standards, and coordination required to reduce contamination from mines and explosive remnants of war.

Schonstedt is proud to support this work through our Humanitarian Demining Initiative. By providing magnetic locators to vetted demining teams across 30+ countries, we’re helping those on the front lines detect hidden threats and restore land for safe use.

Behind every cleared field is a deeply committed team. We’re honored to play a small part in that effort.
