Zahner Zahner provides engineering and fabrication services for architects, artists, and designers. “Zahner employees are visionary perfectionists.

Their work raises the level of an architect's abilities. They are artistic and creative collaborators - from design to fabrication to installation - whose incredible abilities make architectural dreams realities.” — Daniel Libeskind

“Zahner works with the architect's vision, making designs come to life and, in the process, may bring out something revolutionary.” — Antoine Predock

“Without any p

recedent on which to draw, Zahner, a company whose name is in the Rolodex of every European architect with American aspirations, figured out a way to make 3,000 individual panels pixelated with dents of varying depth to produce the desired image. Seurat would have marveled.” — New York Times

“Craftsmanship in large buildings is supposed to be dead, killed by Modernist ideology and cost considerations. What this building says is that maybe craftsmanship has a high-tech future after all.” — Time Magazine

"His firm provides exemplary craftsmanship in everything they undertake, and are seriously and extremely committed to Architecture, with a capital A.” —Frank Gehry

Zahner was founded in 1897 by Andrew Zahner as Eagle Cornice Works, serving the region with decorative cornice works and repair. In 1913, the company became A. Zahner Sheet Metal Company, and over the course of the century would produce metal-work from industrial kitchen tables to metal work on buildings. In 1989, Andrew Zahner's great-grandson, L. William Zahner III became company president, and is credited with transforming the company from a regional sheet-metal contractor into a national architectural metals and facades producer. He also guided the company towards producing works by artists as well as architects. During the past thirty years, the company produced the exteriors for notable structures including the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California, the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington, and is producing the upcoming National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. The firm is involved in the development of architectural metal systems as well as patinas and other surface treatments on metal. Zahner holds five patents which pertain to the Architectural Metals industry Zahner President and CEO L. William Zahner serves as the Industry Liaison for the National Architectural Committee of SMACNA, and in 2006, was awarded the Copper Medal, Associazone Italiana di Metallurgia (AIM). On January 21, 2011, companies Zahner and KME announced a joint venture, Zahner-KME. The venture will offer engineering and building services to architects in the European Market.

🦺🏗️Behind the Build: Bradley International Airport

Behind every large-scale facade is a process of testing, refinement, and collaboration.

For the Terminal A expansion at Bradley International Airport, Zahner worked closely with the design team to refine the perforation densities used across the ImageWall® facade—carefully balancing the clarity of the forest-inspired graphic with the realities of large-scale fabrication.

A full-scale mockup played a key role in the process, allowing the team to evaluate the pattern, finish, and lighting integration before production moved forward.

In addition to the perforated screen, Zahner fabricated custom aluminum wrap panels to conceal structural framing and create a seamless visual connection across the facade system.

Not every wall needs to disappear. Sometimes, it becomes the focal point.

For Carmen’s Garden in Hong Kong, Zahner worked with RMJM Hong Kong Limited and Eton Properties to create a custom laser-cut stainless steel screen inspired by traditional Chinese paper-cutting.

What started as a way to soften a plain concrete wall became a layered sculptural installation that interacts with the surrounding gardens, reflects light throughout the day, and adds depth to the residential entry experience.

The combination of brushed and mirrored stainless steel creates shifting reflections that make the piece feel different from every angle.

Meet the Zahner team heading to AECtech+ Los Angeles 2026.

Burçin Nalinci, Ethan Kerber, and Dan Rothbart will be representing Zahner across the symposium and workshop programming at HKS Los Angeles.

On Thursday, May 28, Burçin takes the symposium stage to share Zahner's R&D work at the intersection of robotics, computation, and craft.

On Friday, May 29, our team co-leads two hands-on workshops with HKS | LINE — Combinatorial Tooling, on producing wide panel variation from a small set of reusable molds, and Selective Patina, on using toolpaths and chemistry as programmable surface design.

A first impression sets the tone for the entire journey. ✈️

For the Terminal A expansion at Bradley International Airport, Zahner collaborated with the project team to create a new architectural facade using our ImageWall® perforated metal panel system.

Finished in “Sunshine Silver,” the perforated aluminum screen brings a stylized forest landscape to the terminal exterior—creating a layered visual effect that shifts with light, movement, and perspective throughout the day.

The result is a calming, sculptural installation that gives arriving passengers a memorable welcome before they even step inside.

Meet Fuscara Blackened Stainless Steel — where depth meets durability. 🖤

With rich, dimensional tones that shift from charcoal to inky black (with subtle hints of bronze and blue), Fuscara brings a bold, refined presence to any space. Unlike painted finishes, its patina is developed through Zahner’s proprietary process—creating a surface that evolves over time.

Engineered to withstand the elements while resisting fingerprints, staining, and corrosion, Fuscara delivers lasting performance without compromising design.

Dark, dramatic, and built to endure.

April is Mathematics & Statistics Awareness Month—and at Zahner, the numbers are always at work behind the craft.

From robot-assisted welding to programmable patina application, our R&D teams are turning complex data into real-world precision. Across Hardware & Robotics, Software & Computation, Material Innovation, and Lifecycle Knowledge, every project becomes a feedback loop—where human expertise meets computational insight.

Because behind every seamless weld and every controlled finish is a system of math, data, and experience working together.

Innovation you can see. Intelligence you can measure.
