A single modern LED bulb produces more light in one hour than many people used in an entire day before electricity.

That was one of the most interesting takeaways from writing this article.

The history of household lighting is not just a story about better bulbs. It is a story about access, cost, efficiency, and how quickly a technology can become normal once it becomes affordable.

A few numbers stood out:

• A standard candle once produced about 13 lumens
• By 1960, more than 98% of U.S. homes had electrical service
• A 60W-equivalent LED bulb fell from more than $50 to under $8 in less than a decade
• By 2024, 90% of U.S. households used LED bulbs

In just 200 years, we went from rationing candlelight to installing bright, efficient LED lighting in kitchens, cabinets, shops, and homes across the country.

That is a massive shift.

And it is a reminder that the products we install today are usually the result of decades, or even centuries, of progress.
