On Monday, July 26, 2021, at a press conference in Newton Falls, Ohio, Smolen Engineering proudly unveiled its preliminary concept for a one-of-a-kind covered bridge enclosure.

The 200' long structure - tentatively named Skylight Falls Covered Bridge - will include the following unique features:

• Robin's egg blue exterior
• 35' Spire with a clock
• 15' wide second level walkway
• Elevator and spiral staircase for access to the walkway
• Vegetative or "green" roof
• Structurally integrated water falls starting from the top of the second level roof canopy
• A clear polycarbonate skylight/roof section for the water falls to cascade over
• Cylindrical custom ironwork centrally located inside the walkway, which will support the skylight and house a clear pipe to feed a rooftop water fountain
• Mini-hydroelectric power grid charged from the Mahoning River to energize bridge appurtenances
• Interior and exterior color-changing L.E.D. illumination
• Six observation platforms

A preliminary opinion of probable cost: $2.5 million

On Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at about 3 p.m., Mother Nature kicked the Village of Roaming Shores square in the mouth with 3" deluge of rain during a short span of 45 minutes, which caused a chunk of Flame Lake Drive to wash out into Lake Roaming Rock.

Realizing a pressing need for outside resources to perform needed repairs, Smolen Engineering moved with lightning speed and within 15-hours submitted an emergency grant request the Ohio Public Works Commission which was approved to fully fund the restoration of the road breach.

Fred the office cat was cautious at first, but made friends quickly with new engineer Zak Nunisto.

Zak was raised in Kingsville, Ohio and is a proud graduate of Edgewood High School where he excelled in academics, played baseball and enjoyed taking shop.

The good news for Zak is he gets along with Fred. This is important because at Smolen Engineering Fred stays and everybody else goes.
