Trochoidal milling – high metal removal

A strategy that delivers high metal removal when machining titanium is trochoidal milling. Machining either deep or shallow pockets in titanium is known to be a difficult task and as a large proportion of the tool is continuously engaged with the workpiece, cutting forces and heat levels are elevated. Another common problem is uneven chip load per tooth, for example high loads at the point where the cutter has advanced furthest into the workpiece and lower loads in other areas. Titanium pocket machining also creates a range of issues related to chip evacuation – as the cutter fills most of the machined slot width, little room remains for chip evacuation so the chance of re-cutting chips is high.

SGS has recognized the potential of trochoidal milling in recent years and has promoted the development of solid carbide end mill cutters in addition to extended flute milling cutters for high productivity when using indexable inserts. Now trochoidal milling can easily be applied using a large variety of SGS’ milling tools. In order to gain maximum performance in this area SGS recommends the use of their T-Carb. SGS is our Premier End Mill Source.

The titanium machining challenge is even greater when the slots to be cut are relatively deep in relation to their width as this machining task increases the difficulty of chip evacuation. Also, when the machined slots are curved rather than straight, chip evacuation becomes even more difficult.

Typically, titanium slot machining difficulties make it necessary to run at low feed rates and depth of cut to avoid vibrations and premature cutting tool failure. These enforced conditions lead to unwanted deficiencies in productivity. Even at reduced feed rates, tool life tends to be short when cutting slots.

What beautiful weather we had for the 22nd Annual Ames Golf Fundraiser on June 15th! This Fundraiser is always a great time with a great customer to help those in need. Ames will always partner with local charities so the money raised goes directly to that location. The money raised this year went towards the Ronald McDonald House of Hershey, PA.

Thoughts from Tom

“Brain Drain” is still a serious problem in our country as there are still skill shortages. In particular, those engineering and technical specialists who are seeking a variety of opportunities in Silicon Valley and elsewhere continues to be a problem for our industry. Our responsibility is to speak up and out at every opportunity we have available to us and to certainly make use of the resources that are also just a click away on our computers. Both the NTMA and PMA professional organizations offer links on their websites below for further information regarding technical and skill based training that is available to manufacturers and in some cases with matching federal or state funding aid.

"Thoughts from Tom"

Where is the business?

According to a recently published report by Industrial Supply magazine, the numbers show quite a large segment for manufacturing in our geographical area, specifically $239,322.094 dollars in end user consumption by region. These numbers are for the Mid-Atlantic area only and if you combine them with the numbers for construction and mining, the number jumps to almost $300,000,000. In short, we all face an ever-changing array of challenges to develop our businesses but if we focus our energies on areas of growth including renewable energy and/or battery powered vehicles to aerospace and power generation we may be looking past some unique growth potentials that are right before us.
