A recent publication in Advanced Functional Materials highlights a key challenge in advanced materials research: achieving high-performance nanostructures with precise control, consistency, and scalability.

One of the enabling technologies behind this work? Star Burst wet jet milling.
In this study, Star Burst was used to process materials at the nano-scale, leveraging ultra-high-pressure water jet collisions to drive:

âś… Efficient particle size reduction
âś… Uniform dispersion
âś… Controlled surface modification

Unlike conventional milling methods, Star Burst enables nano-level pulverization and exfoliation without grinding media, significantly reducing contamination risks while maintaining material purity.

That matters. Because in advanced materials like nanosheets or engineered interfaces, even minor impurities or inconsistent particle sizes can dramatically impact performance.

Just as important, the process offers:
🔹 Narrow particle size distribution for reproducibility
🔹 Short processing times for research efficiency
🔹 A clear path from R&D to scale-up using the same core parameters

👉 In other words: the same process that works in the lab can translate to production, without compromise.

This article is a great example of how processing technology is no longer just a step in the workflow; it’s a critical lever in material innovation. You can find the link to the study in the comments below.

As more breakthroughs depend on nano-level precision and repeatability, technologies like Star Burst are helping bridge the gap between discovery and deployment.

The JDM Water Jet Deburring Machine isn’t just another addition to the Jet Clean Center lineup; it’s a leap forward in performance.

With 70 MPa (10,000 PSI) of water jet pressure, the JDM delivers faster burr removal and shorter cycle times, helping you boost productivity without sacrificing quality.

Its Dual-Flow Nozzle combines straight and L-shaped jets in a single tool, enabling burr removal on all five surfaces of the workpiece without turret-style switching. Paired with an A-axis tilt table, the JDM gives you complete access to complex geometries, including the back side of parts, all in a compact footprint that fits where manual stations once stood.

If you need a solution that maximizes efficiency, reduces handling, and adapts to your toughest deburring challenges, the JDM is ready to deliver.

Medical manufacturers are under more pressure than ever to deliver components that are not only dimensionally accurate but also validated as clean. Even microscopic burrs or residual chips can affect flow paths, sealing surfaces, and ultimately device performance.

That’s why so many teams are shifting away from manual deburring toward high‑pressure, CNC‑controlled waterjet deburring.

Sugino’s JCC systems remove burrs and wash parts in the same automated cycle, eliminating abrasive media and avoiding heat‑affected zones that could compromise delicate geometries. Their CNC‑controlled nozzles deliver 0.08 mm positioning accuracy, giving medical manufacturers the consistency they need for repeatable, validated production.

In an industry where cleanliness and reliability directly impact patient outcomes, technologies that enhance repeatability, eliminate variability, and stabilize quality aren’t just operational upgrades; they’re risk‑reduction tools.

Manual deburring slows production, introduces variability, and increases labor cost.

Sugino’s Jet Clean Centers solve all three by combining high‑pressure deburring and parts cleaning into a single, CNC‑controlled process.

Whether your line handles brake calipers, valve bodies, transmission housings, or EV stator shells, JCC systems provide:
🛻 Repeatability/consistency across high‑volume runs
đź›» Automatic chip removal with targeted nozzles & submerged cleaning
đź›» Full automation compatibility: robots, gantries, conveyors

The result? Higher first‑pass yield, less rework, and cleaner deburred parts ready for assembly.

Traditional shot peening has limitations - primarily that it needs "line of sight" to have an impact on the surface it's treating.

Cavitation Water Jet Peening can smooth, strengthen, and improve interior walls and curved surfaces inside holes and passageways.

And it has a host of other advantages as well:
💧 Reusable media (water) – saves resources & saves money
đź’§ Faster process time
đź’§ No shot media to buy or dispose of
đź’§ No part contamination
💧 (And it’s cheaper too)

How do you deburr a cross hole or internal feature you can barely see, let alone reach?

It's one of the challenges of automotive manufacturing. EV components and advanced ICE parts don't avoid complexity. They demand solutions that still get the job done.

That's the problem Sugino's JCC Series solves.

Using a hollow 2-axis tilting rotary table, the JCC 4+1 accesses all six sides of the workpiece in a single setup. High-pressure water jets reach deep bores, stepped passages, and cross holes that other methods miss, without abrasives or heat that could compromise part integrity.

The built-in JCC‑eSmart package also cuts power consumption and lowers CO₂ output, so sustainability and efficiency move together, not in opposition.

For manufacturers building the next generation of vehicles, precision cleaning can't be an afterthought.

Not one, but two opportunities to learn how cavitation-based technologies are advancing additive manufacturing performance this June.

This year, our team is excited to contribute two technical presentations focused on solving some of the most persistent challenges in aerospace AM: surface finish, fatigue performance, and treating internal features that are out of line-of-sight.

🔹 Presentation 1 - AeroMat – TODAY, June 2nd, 1 pm
Surface Smoothing and Compressive Residual Stress Studies for AM Metals Using Cavitation Abrasive Surface Finishing & Peening for Fatigue Performance

Dr. Sanders dives into fatigue comparison studies on AM Ti 6Al 4V coupons built and processed under various conditions, including HIP + CASF. Attendees will see data demonstrating how CASF combines controlled material removal with cavitation-induced shock waves to improve surface roughness and compressive residual stress, helping bridge the gap toward fatigue-critical AM structures.

🔹 Presentation 2 – AeroTech – June 4th, 9 am
Cleaning Up the Non-Line of Sight Hidden Areas of AM Ti 6Al 4V Bores and Circuitous Passageways with Cavitation Abrasive Surface Finishing & Peening

This talk highlights recent research on LPBF titanium tubular AM parts, showing how CASF enables effective cleaning, smoothing, and strengthening of internal bores, channels, and trapped passageways, including removal of residual powder, debris, alpha case, and internal support structures.

Together, these sessions offer a comprehensive look at how cavitation water jet peening and abrasive surface finishing are enabling next-generation AM components, especially those with complex geometries, stepped bores, hidden fluid chambers, and long, circuitous internal passageways.

📍If you’re attending, we invite you to join both sessions and connect with our team at AeroMat booth 407 to explore what’s next for aerospace AM post-processing.
