It depends. Diagnostic tools can connect to brand new engines and perform basic diagnostics, but full coverage may lag if the engine is extremely new. Diagnostic tool databases are updated three times per year for major platforms like Jaltest, but new engine models released by manufacturers can take a few months to years to appear in production diagnostic software.

This lag is unavoidable and reflects the time required to discover, validate, and test new engine configurations.

One of the most valuable tools in modern technical support is the remote support session. If you've been using diagnostic tools for a while, you might have experienced the frustration of trying to explain a technical problem over the phone. "It shows a red box on the left side... no, the other left... Now it's green." When you switch to remote support, the technician can see exactly what you're seeing. Let's walk through how a typical remote support session works with Marine Diagnostic Tool's US based team, and why it's so much more effective than trying to solve problems over the phone.

We just launched the MDT Demo Library, a growing collection of real software walkthroughs that show the tool in action before you buy.

Not a brochure. Not a feature list. Not a sales pitch, just demos so you can see how the software looks, how the menus flow, how engine data is displayed, and what the tool actually feels like to use.

Check out the MDT Demo Library here: https://getmarinediagnostictools.com/the-demo-library

Most marine mechanics, and technicians don't need more data, they need clarity. A good diagnostic tool should let you work across multiple engine brands, diagnose both gas and diesel, run tests and calibrations, access wiring diagrams and troubleshooting steps, and solve problems without switching tools or guessing. If your tool can't do that, it becomes a bottleneck.

5 things coming to marine service between now and 2030.

Shops and mobile techs who plan for this will own the decade. Shops that don't will spend it catching up.

Your call.

More ECU complexity every model year
Electric/hybrid growing at 12.5% CAGR
AI-assisted diagnostics in 2 to 3 years
Remote fleet monitoring going mainstream
The dealer-independent gap is widening

One decision separates the two groups: are you building real diagnostic capability now, or waiting?

A thorough marine survey used to rely on a surveyor's eyes, ears, and hands. Visual inspection, running the engine, checking fluid levels, and listening for odd sounds. That's still important. But buyers demand more. They want data. Lenders require documented proof of engine health. Insurance companies want baseline diagnostics. A modern survey needs all three; inspection, sea trial data, and diagnostic scans.

$68,000.

That's what running a marine shop WITHOUT diagnostics quietly costs you every year.

Not marketing math. Industry-average math from our 2026 report.

Swipe for the full breakdown: → $10,800 to $21,600/year in dealer code reads → Lost labor hours while boats wait → Lost repeat service work → Lost customer trust when turnaround is 3 weeks

A scan tool that pays for itself in under 6 months and generates $60K+ in retained revenue isn't an expense. It's a margin decision.

Every technician using an independent diagnostic tool eventually encounters this frustration: you buy a new software package, connect to a brand-new engine, and discover coverage is incomplete. The tool feels like it's holding back. In most cases, it's not holding back, coverage simply hasn't been developed yet. This lag happens to every independent platform, regardless of brand.

Unlike generic automotive scanners, marine diagnostics require understanding the unique systems found on boats. From outboards and inboards to diesel engines, electrical systems, and integrated marine electronics, your tool must handle complexity across multiple domains. The right tool saves you money, time, and frustration. The wrong one becomes an expensive paperweight that collects dust in your shop.
