Recently witnessed an adaptation of this at a remodeled Walmart where the self-check stations were arranged in a cellular configuration like this. They doubled the stations, with only one employee overseeing the operation, and no queue. Adjacent to the cell, there were two self check stations with extended belts for customers with more items. Looked incredibly more efficient than traditional check out methods.

The assembly line is no longer the cheapest, most efficient way to produce mass produce goods. In Japan, the electronics industry has switched to a cellular assembly method called seru.
