Extension Educator Spotlight 🔦
Jared Gibbons is the extension educator to contact for any soil related questions. He can put a compost sample or soil sample under the microscope and tell you how much biological activity there is and what kinds are there, ie. fungi, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes. This tells you how much natural nutrient cycling and natural fertility is in the sample.

Gibbons has shared some of this information in the classes he has taught on compost, mulches, organic gardening, market gardening/ farmer’s markets. He organizes a few Master Gardeners in Madison County as well as helping the larger Master Gardener Program throughout the eastern side of the state. In the coming year, he will be teaching classes for absolute beginning gardeners (Brown Thumbs- Gardening 101). He would also like to offer a class on plant breeding in the future.

When asked, Gibbons said his favorite part of his job is the variety in his work that is always giving him something interesting to work on or answer. He also enjoys working on anything out of the ordinary- heritage and heirloom apple varieties, uncommon or unique plant species that are adapted to our growing conditions, or just all the cultivars that exist of something common like peony. So there is no Master Gardener related question that Jared wouldn’t want the chance to help find the answer to. You can find more information on how to contact him at the University’s website.

Extension Educator Spotlight 🔦
Over the past 32 years, Reed Findlay had the opportunity to teach all of the master gardener lessons. His love of teaching is evident if you have ever attended one of his many classes. He particularly enjoys teaching classes where he and the students have hands-on experiences and are face-to-face.

Reed is an agronomist by education, but has expertise in a variety of agricultural principles. His current position as an extension educator in Bannock and Bingham counties has him focusing on soil, entomology, and horticulture. If you have any questions about these topics feel free to contact him from the University’s website.

Extension Educator Spotlight 🔦

Bracken Henderson is an extension educator from Franklin county with an interest in and experience working with woody plants and w**d management. Although there is no master gardener program in his county as of now, he often teaches classes for the Bonneville county Master Gardeners.

He is currently working on collecting and propagating unique native woody plant cultivars. He hopes to one day introduce some of our local species with desirable genetic anomalies into the horticultural industry.

Bracken said he enjoys his job the most when he is answering questions people have about their horticulture issues, so reach out to him with any questions you have about your woody plants or w**d management.
