The UAH Reliability and Failure Analysis Lab (RFAL) is a multi-disciplinary organization providing customers with access to the latest developments in the field of reliability. Our students have hands on experience with the tools that support our research efforts. We develop experienced candidates for the worldwide engineering workforce. Our research customer base includes both government and comm

ercial clients. We are active participants in the current effort within the DoD to minimize operational costs of their weapon systems through effective implementation of RCM and CBM. Our specialties include examining material properties of components that have reliability and safety implications due to the life extension of their current systems. Much of our commercial customer’s focus has been on verifying that their delivered products meet or exceed the stated standards for reliability and maintainability. The impact of our analysis has a positive impact on their designs resulting in cost effective design changes and optimization of vendor selection. Our lab is focused on providing our customers with a full range of capabilities grounded in the Reliability Engineering Discipline. We offer capabilities that span the life cycle of a product from Design for Reliability to After Market Testing, aka… “Cradle to Grave”

Our services include:

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)
Condition Based Maintenance (CBM)
Reliability Modeling
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Failure Mode, Effects, and Critically Analysis (FMECA)
Risk Assessment
Probability Risk Assessment (PRA)
Testing to determine design and destruct limits
Physics of Failure
Reliability Modeling
UID Parts Marking Policy
Design of Experiments
Materials Research
Reliability Testing – Design to grave
Analysis of HUMS Data
Complex Modeling and Simulation

RFAL has been working hard over the last several months in being compliant and making improvements based upon the ISO 9001:2015 requirements. We are pleased to announce that we have now passed our audits and we are ISO 9001:2015 Certified for our Reliability Testing Services.

08/20/2018

As of August 20, 2018 RFAL is ISO-9001 Compliant. We will use the process from this point forward with the goal of obtaining Certification in the near future. Please keep RFAL in mind for all Reliability Engineering Services. This compliant status covers our Engineering and Test Services.

We are very close to becoming ISO-9001 Compliant and working hard towards full approval.

RFAL joins forces with the Rotorcraft Systems Engineering and Simulation Center (RSESC). The synergy of reliability and the capabilities of RSESC have joined to make a new team. RFAL will be a sub center of RSESC which has Mr. Dave Arterburn as the center director. Mr. Arterburn currently heads a multi-disciplined team of researchers and students working on rotorcraft, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), model based systems engineering and payloads for space and earth bound systems. Mr. Arterburn leads the UAH team supporting the FAA UAS Center of Excellence as a core university on the Alliance for System Safety of UAS through Research Excellence (ASSURE) Team. He is the Principal Investigator for a four school ASSURE team conducting research in UAS ground collision severity and development of safety systems for UAS systems to reduce the potential for injury to non-participants during UAS operations over people. He is currently a member of an ASTM team working on consensus standards for the safety of UAS for flying over people. The RFAL team is excited about joining forces and the new potentials that this will lead in research.
