Note to all my permitted CAFO farmers: it is that time of year again, where you should pump your manure storage structure out completely and lagoon systems down to the stop pumping level (found in you NMP). We’re getting into the wet season where there is significantly less evaporation from storage structures. Pump onto an activity growing crop to reduce nutrient losses. It looks like we are in for lots and lots of rain. Make sure your lagoons are pumped down to the stop pumping level (found in you NMP). Stay safe! Remember it’s always better to apply on saturated soils than to let you lagoon overtop. But if you must apply on saturated soils contact Courtney Wilson or your local EPD office and let them know since it is not an acceptable practice in your NMP, and you will be out of compliance with your permit. Praying for rain for all of my producers! Be careful adding manure to dry land crops and be sure to add plenty of fresh water along with manure water to irrigated crops. When keeping irrigation records be sure to either only record manure applications, or be sure to note fresh water versus manure water applications. If you are adding fresh water to your lagoon for irrigation be sure to take additional manure water samples. You will need to average a typical early spring sample and a diluted summer sample for your records. Please call me if you need assistance!

For all GA state LAS ( both medium and large) permitted CAFO facilities, don’t forget you have to apply for the new permit in GEOS by March 31. Please start now with the GEOS system! It is NOT user friendly.

To my swine and dairy farmers…if this frog strangling rain even has you in a bind, remember it is better to land apply on saturated soils than to let your lagoon overflow! If you need to land apply be sure to call Courtney Wilson GDA or you local EPD office before irrigating!!! They need to be informed first to keep you out of trouble. Stay safe out there!

To all my liquid manure folks! It’s that time of year again! Get those lagoons pumped down to the “stop pumping” level. You can find that level in your NMP. For manure storages, they are designed to be pumped out annually, so make sure you have the capacity you need to make it until your next pump out time. Fall/winter is when we get significant precipitation and much less evapotranspration, so manure storages get full quick!

Also remember, if you must land apply to a field that is already saturated this is not an approved practice in you NMP so please contact Courtney Wilson at GDA or EPD to let them know you are under emergency application conditions!

Always always always remember manure safety!!! Hydrogen Sulfide is deadly at very low concentrations so get your H2S meters or a multi-gas meter to wear (as close to you face as possible). I don’t want to read about any of my wonderful producers in the paper or on the news!!!!

I’ve heard from a few people that letters are going out from EPD asking for NMPs to be submitted. If you have questions about NMPs, need a NMP written or revised, soil or manure samples collected, or need calibrations done give me a call! I’m happy to help!

People who are sue happy over farmers just trying to make a living need to have a cranium check! Where do the think their food comes from?!?!? I know two good dairy farmer being sued right now over complete nonsense! They need to think of a world without milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, gelato, and a million other products that come from dairy farms! I’m very sad tonight thinking of this controversy! Love your neighbors folks!
