The history behind National Police Officers Memorial Day.
Over 63 years ago, President John F. Kennedy signed a public law designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day on October 1, 1962. This is to honor officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. In 1982, the first memorial service was held at the U.S. Capitol and that tradition continues today. In 1991, through private donations led by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was dedicated with over 12,000 fallen officers engraved. As of today, the wall holds over 24,000 officers who lost their lives in service.
This day reminds us of the courage, sacrifice and service behind the badge. Remembering and honoring the legacy of those who protected our communities.
