C&A is excited to formalize an unofficial practice we have permitted for years: flexible scheduling for volunteer first responders. Did you know our office in Hudson NY is at center of a county with 100% volunteer fire service? The firm recognizes the valuable contributions of employees who serve as volunteer first responders. To support their commitment, C&A has released a corporate policy to provide flexible scheduling options for our volunteer first responders as feasible, based on job type and business needs.

Did you stay up all night on overhaul and need to crash? Respond to an unsuccessful Echo call this morning and need some time to decompress? Our President has been there, and we get it. As engineers we work together as a team every day to solve big problems so we can also do that to cover for each other at times when the community needs us more.

We encourage more businesses to consider similar policies, our rural communities need it. Stay safe this holiday season everyone!

C&A is so proud to have been able to help the Tivoli Fire Department expand their firehouse to meet the growing needs of their community. From grant support to construction design, our engineers work hard to help our clients realize their ideas.

Last evening members of the Tivoli Fire Company along with The Village of Tivoli held a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the start of our capital campaign project. This will mark the start of landing clearing along with work to install the proper drainage throughout the property to accommodate our new expansion.
Thank you to all the elected officials, community members, & members of the Tivoli Fire Company who have helped make this campaign successful.

This year, the C&A Team is dressing as a combined sewer system and overflow (CSO) to raise awareness about water quality and the importance of sewer infrastructure investment for public health and safety.



Combined sewer systems are a relic of past design practices that were not intended for for the population density and water quality standards of today. They are typically found in older cities, along large waterbodies that are navigable to support commerce. Most of the CSO permittees in the New York are clustered in older industrial areas, like Hudson NY. In these systems, both sanitary and stormwater runoff are combined in single sewer pipes that drain to the wastewater treatment plant in dry weather, and overflow at designated CSOs during rain events. Swimming, boating, and fishing are inadvisable in the days after CSO events due to water contamination with raw untreated sewage.

Communities all along the Hudson River are working to close their CSOs permanently through sewer separation projects where aging combined sewer pipes are excavated and replaced with separated sanitary and storm sewers. Some communities have already closed all their CSOs! This critical process requires investment, persistence, and patience on behalf of the community. Without significant investment into the city's aging sewers, new growth and developments have been and will continue to be stymied, exacerbating the community's housing crisis.
