Every barn we go into has something left behind. Old tools, wiring, odd pieces of hardware that nobody's touched in decades.

But the wood? It is what we're really after. Old beams and boards still get used in new homes, barn venues, mantels, and tables.

Every mark on these beams was cut by hand well over a century ago. The barn got moved and rebuilt, and the timber just kept doing its job.

Beams like these work in a lot of places. Barn venues, homes, great rooms, even mantels and ceiling beams.

Before it was a beam, it was a tree, and getting it out of the woods took a railroad. This is a log car from the Yosemite Lumber Company, which logged the Sierra Nevada from 1912 to 1942.

Most of that timber is long gone. Barn frames from the same era are still standing, and some are looking for a new home.

A crew standing in the frame of a barn that isn't finished yet. Stone foundation below, timber bents going up, and everyone on the job up on the beams.

No cranes. No power tools. Just people, rope, and a lot of well-cut joinery.

The Mossy Creek barn, circa 1800s. Built not long after the Rural Valley was first settled, it was part of the wave of agricultural building that shaped the area in the early 1800s.
