Not every concrete pour wants the same wood, and using the wrong one costs you time, money, or both.
YELLOW PINE — The workhorse of the yard. Stiff, strong, and the most common choice for footings, slabs, and standard wall forms. It holds its shape under the weight of wet concrete without warping mid-pour. If the form only needs to last through one or two uses, yellow pine gives you the best balance of price and performance. Available in standard 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, and 2x10 dimensions.
PRESSURE-TREATED — Built for anything the yellow pine cannot handle. Ground contact, standing water, high humidity, or forms that are staying in place longer than a typical pour cycle. The chemical treatment resists rot and insect damage, which matters most on footings left exposed before backfill or on jobs that run through a rainy stretch. Costs more upfront than yellow pine, but you are not replacing warped or rotted boards mid-project.
REDWOOD — The premium choice, and worth it when the form has to come off clean. Architectural concrete, exposed finishes, curved forms, or any form getting reused multiple times across a job. Redwood resists warping better than pine over repeated use and releases from cured concrete with a smoother, more consistent finish. Higher cost, but the extended lifespan and finish quality pay for themselves on repeat pours.
