Engineering Insights on Demand: Why isn't Wi-Fi commonly used in industrial automation—even when latency isn't the issue?

1️⃣ Reliability & Interference: Industrial environments are filled with RF noise from motors and welders. Wi-Fi struggles with packet loss and jitter, making it unreliable.
2️⃣ Determinism & Real-Time Control: Protocols like PROFINET IRT and EtherCAT need strict timing. Wi-Fi can’t guarantee consistent delivery, which breaks synchronization.
When precision matters, wired always wins.

New to ICP DAS USA, the Win-GRAF XP-9000-IoT series are Windows 10 IoT Enterprise based PACs that combine computing, I/O, and operator interface into a single unit, and provide the perfect solution for integrating HMI, data acquisition and control in an individual PAC. They are equipped with an Intel E3845 CPU, 1/3/7 I/O expansion slots and a variety of connectives including dual Gigabit Ethernet, VGA , USB port, RS-232 and RS-485 interface. Local I/O slots are available to I-9K and I-97K series I/O modules and remote I/O expansions are available with Ethernet and RS-485 I/O modules.

M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a European standard (EN 13757-2 physical and link layer) for remote meter reading and control of utility meters such as electricity, gas, water, and heat meters. It is a communication protocol designed for robust and reliable data exchange between meters and data acquisition systems.

M-Bus uses a two-wire communication system with a maximum cable length of 1.2 km and a data rate of up to 9600 baud. It supports both wired and wireless communication, making it a flexible and adaptable solution for various metering applications. M-Bus also has a low power consumption, which is ideal for battery-powered meters.

Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3) is a set of communications protocols used between components in process automation systems. Its main use is in utilities such as electric and water companies. Gateways and converters offer data communication interoperability and network interconnection. They allow for connecting and the exchanging of data with different automation devices as they facilitate communication between different networks or protocols. Most of our gateways convert fieldbus communication back to Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP.

Our gateways are easy to set up and use. Most are configurable over a web browser and no programming is required. We offer configuration services if you’d like us to set the IP address and other settings before we ship.

In this diagram here you can see at the top left there’s a PC that has our PCI cards that enable communication over CAN Bus. At the top right you can see there’s a SCADA system running on a notebook computer which has communication to the CAN network through our I-7565 USB to CAN converter. Our I-7532 CAN Bridge device connects a high-speed CAN network to a mid-speed CAN network. I-7531 CAN repeaters help extend the communication distance and improve the signal. I-7530 CAN to RS-232 converters allow a PLC that controls a motor into the network. An I-2534 CAN Switch networks together different CAN networks that communicate over varying speeds. I-7540D-WF CAN to Wi-Fi gateways allow for wireless communication to CAN equipment. CAN Remote I/O are connected to sensors and actuators. CAN communication cards in our programmable automation controllers allow for programs developed with Visual Studio.NET and Linux to control and monitor CAN devices.
