Quality begins before production starts. Materials are verified, certifications and test reports are reviewed, and mix designs are checked to help ensure concrete batches meet approved requirements. Equipment and forms are also routinely inspected to maintain proper dimensions and consistent production performance.

Before concrete placement, reinforcing cages and other components are inspected for reinforcement, dimensions, embedded items, block-outs, and other requirements. During production, concrete is tested for properties such as slump, air content, temperature, and compressive strength, depending on the product and mix.

Curing is carefully monitored, followed by post-pour inspections to check product condition, dimensions, joints, and other details. Additional finished-product testing may also be performed based on project requirements.

Before shipment, each product receives a final inspection to verify its condition, applicable strength requirements, and proper loading and securement for transportation.

When heavy rainfall puts stormwater infrastructure to the test, the systems below the surface need to be designed and built to withstand demanding conditions.

A 2022 incident at the ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฌ๐›๐ฎ๐ซ๐ ๐ก ๐๐จ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐†๐š๐ซ๐๐ž๐ง highlights the importance of carefully considering the materials and design used in underground stormwater systems. A portion of the parking lot collapsed after a stormwater retention system was installed beneath it. Engineers and inspectors investigated the cause of the failure. The system was designed to hold approximately 177,000 gallons of stormwater.

The incident is a reminder that underground stormwater infrastructure may be out of sight, but its performance directly impacts the surface above and the communities that depend on it.

In its September 2024 Claim Reduction series, the ๐€๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‚๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ฅ ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ (๐€๐’๐‚๐„) examined failures involving underground plastic stormwater detention systems and highlighted concerns related to the structural behavior of thermoplastics, including long-term deformation, or creep, under sustained loads. Those findings are an important reminder that underground systems must be evaluated not only for initial cost and installation, but also for how materials perform over time and under demanding conditions.

The Pineville Business Park is another example of how the right storm drainage system can become part of a developmentโ€™s long-term foundation.

For this North Carolina commercial development, Rinker Materials supplied reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and flared end sections to support the siteโ€™s storm drainage needs.

The project included more than 13,800 linear feet of RCP, ranging from 15" to 72" in diameter, providing the scale and capacity needed to support stormwater management across the site.

We appreciated the opportunity to provide a closer look at our concrete pipe manufacturing process, including production, handling, and quality control procedures.

The tour also highlighted the importance of finished product testing in evaluating different properties of concrete pipe and precast products. Depending on project requirements, testing may include Hydrostatic Testing to verify joint watertightness and the Three-Edge Bearing Test, which evaluates the strength of concrete pipe.

It was a great opportunity to showcase the care and attention that goes into each step of the process and to share how testing and quality control support the production of reliable concrete pipe solutions.
