Jordan High School (HS #9), for Katy ISD, has recently received the award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston as the Top Educational Construction Project. Jordan High School placed first in the "Publicly Funded" category evaluating the project based on safety, quality, ingenuity, and workmanship.

This is the third high school that LEAF has designed for Katy ISD as we work on the design for High School #10 scheduled to begin construction early next year, 2022. The high school is more than 600,000 square feet with 2-three story classroom wings, several learning stairs, movable classroom walls, auditorium, CATE areas, natatorium, and athletic facilities that would rival any small college.

Congratulations to everyone that has worked on this awesome project.

LEAF was awarded two projects for the West Contra Cost Unified School District located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Working with PBK WLC Architects, LEAF will provide new HVAC systems for two campuses, Collins Elementary and The Cameron School. Each of these campuses were originally constructed in 1949 and have only had heat serving the campuses for the last 70 years. These will be challenging projects to get equipment, ductwork and electrical services installed in buildings built in the mid-1900's.

The West Contra Costa USD currently has 54 campuses and serves more than 32,000 students.

The area has a long history of being associated with several national governments. Originally, the area was settled on behalf of Spain in the late 1700's as part of the missions being built along the west coast. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and the area was under Mexican control. Beginning in 1847, the Bear Flag Revolt marked the beginning of the Mexican-American War and ultimately California became part of the United States. Thus, the County of Contra Costa became one of the original 27 counties when California became the 31st state in 1850.

LEAF Engineers is excited to be in the design phase on the New Fort Bend County Epicenter project located southwest of Houston. The project will be a unique multi-purpose facility that will host a wide range of events from sporting events, exhibition hall, rodeo, music concerts and graduations.

The Epicenter will have a 10,000 seat capacity with telescopic and fixed seating and can be converted in several different configurations based on the event. In addition to the main arena, there will also be a 20,000 sf multipurpose arena and covered outdoor pavilion area to host exhibits and large assemblies.

The site is located in Fort Bend County, just 35 miles southwest of downtown Houston and will be located next to the county fairground complex just off US Highway 59.

This is a very unique project in many different ways:
• Project is funded thru a private entity that will build the project and lease the facility back to the county.
• Three different architectural firms are involved in the design of the project (PBK Sports, STOA Architects and Sustaita Architects). Leaf will design the entire project.
• Project design team will work directly with the contracting team in more of a design/build partnership to ensure the design and budget work together.

Addressing the needs of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is receiving increased attention. The outdoor air brought into the building comes with a cost, and LEAF's enthalpy wheels provide a solution by exchanging the energy between the building’s exhaust air and incoming outdoor air.

- The outside air load dominates the classroom design cooling load.
- Enthalpy effectiveness 70-80%.
- Enthalpy wheels mitigate the energy operating cost increase generated from an outdoor air rate increase.
- Reduces peak electrical demand and energy consumption.
- 3-6 years of payback or potential for instant payback.
- Conserve energy, preserve cooling and heating.

Teaming with Selma Unified School District located in the heart of the Central Valley in California, LEAF Engineers has identified several projects to help the district use Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER Funds) to make district HVAC improvements.

The first group of these projects involves converting existing evaporative cooler systems to air conditioning systems for eleven multi-purpose and gym buildings at ten sights. When completed, these projects will improve the indoor air quality and provide a higher level of comfort within the spaces for many years to come.

Tomball ISD recently opened their new 10,000 seat District Stadium and Education Complex located just north of Houston. The project consists of new elementary, new junior high, new stadium and community building all located on one site. The site is located in a prominent location just off the Grand Parkway near 249. LEAF worked with PBK Architects for the school facilities and PBK Sports for the stadium buildings.

LEAF has designed the last 9 new campuses for the district over the past 15 years and the district continues to be one of the highest growth districts in the area. Congratulations to everyone that worked on these high profile projects.
