Late last month, I visited 201 Fillmore, a project that we’re working on with Nucor Rebar Fabrication and Baker Construction. I thought I’d take a few shots of the unique stud rail installation they were doing that day. This is a view from ground level, looking down into what will be a five-story underground parking garage. As you can see, there are stud rails that have been installed head-down in the foundation cage.

While there are a lot of unique challenges to this project, this is a solution you don’t see very often! Despite the raft slab being 60” thick at this column, the Engineer of Record ended up needing stud rails to handle the punching shear for the vertical load. While there is a mud slab under the structural slab, there’s no place to nail chairs for the stud rails. As such, they’re hung from the top steel to maintain vertical alignment and 3” clear cover to the bottom of concrete.

We’re always looking for projects that can benefit from our experience and expertise. Please feel free to reach out on any concrete project regardless of phase so we can assist you!

As much as we enjoy celebrating projects on this page, there are a number of issues that deserve consideration that get illustrated from time to time by images we get from the field.

Today's issue is congestion. It starts off as an engineering problem, then becomes a detailing problem, then a placement problem, and finally a potential performance issue. This is especially true of post-tension anchorages at beams.

As an engineering problem, this is fairly simple – a few column bars, the column ties, a couple of top bar hooks, the post-tension anchors and some bursting steel. As the design progresses, the beam gets a little wider, the beam gets a little deeper . . . add a tendon or two, a couple more top bars, a fourth column bar . . . we'll figure it out, right?

Between our detailer and the placers, we did, but it was certainly a challenge. The best time to settle these types of issues is early in the design process – and we're happy to help, no matter where you are in the design process. Feel free to reach out and we'll walk through a quick anchor layout to make sure everything is on track.

This week's is the Whole Foods Market East Block Office and Parking Garage from 2021. This project has about 177,000 square feet of post-tension two-way plates for office and fitness space and 120,000 square feet of post-tension beam-and-slab construction for the parking deck. The building was constructed above an existing post-tension parking structure.

Advanced Post-Tension supplied more than 940,000 linear feet of post-tension tendons, 1,400 stud rails, and 9,000 feet of galvanized barrier cable for this project. We also provided engineering support for the installation as well as modifications to the existing structure and the tie-in between the existing and new parking ramps.
