Can a compact boring machine complete short water-service crossings through glacial till and cobble?

Sometimes—but the complete application must be evaluated carefully.

Prairie Dog’s latest article explains:

- Why short bores can take longer than expected
- How cobble concentration affects the bore
- Why pit-launched equipment may be considered
- What information is needed before recommending a machine
- When another installation method may be more appropriate

There is a lot of attention on funding lead service line replacement, but eventually all of those plans turn into individual construction jobs.

EPA recently released additional guidance for water systems, so I looked at the issue from the field side. One practical question is how many replacements will involve a street, sidewalk or driveway crossing—and whether open-cutting every one is the best approach.

I put together a short article on what the new guidance means for construction and equipment planning:

I’d be interested to hear how utilities and contractors are approaching this work in different parts of the country.

EPA has updated lead service line replacement guidance and funding resources. See what municipalities and contractors should consider when planning short underground crossings.

Recent USDA rural water investments provide practical examples of where infrastructure funding is going in 2026: replacing aging mains, extending service, reducing water loss, improving treatment capacity, and addressing recurring system problems.

Our latest article examines what these projects show—and why utilities and contractors must still address eligibility, allowable costs, engineering requirements, and procurement before construction begins.

Not every underground boring machine should be operated the same way.

One misconception we see fairly often is that Prairie Dog machines should use multiple progressively larger back reaming passes.

That's common advice for some large hydraulic HDD rigs—but it isn't the normal operating procedure for Prairie Dog pit-launched boring machines.

Using the wrong technique can add unnecessary work and create confusion in the field.

We put together a new article explaining:

Why Prairie Dog machines normally use one correctly selected back reamer
When stacked back reamers are appropriate
Why Prairie Dog procedures differ from generic HDD recommendations

If you've ever wondered why different boring machines use different techniques, this article will help clear things up.

Replacement Parts Matter. Good Support Matters More.

When a boring machine is down, the first question is often:

“What part do I need?”

At Prairie Dog Boring Equipment, we first help determine whether a replacement part is actually necessary.

Many service calls turn out to involve a minor adjustment, routine maintenance, or an operating question. By troubleshooting with the customer over the phone—and reviewing photos by text when needed—we can often help resolve the problem without selling an unnecessary part.

When a replacement is required, Prairie Dog stocks most Prairie Dog-specific parts and can ship them quickly. We can also walk customers through many common repairs over the phone.

Our goal is simple: reduce downtime and help customers get their machines back to work.

How Easy Are Prairie Dog Boring Machines to Maintain and Repair?

Equipment downtime can be costly, especially when a machine has to be shipped to a specialty repair center or wait on a proprietary part.

Prairie Dog boring machines are designed with serviceability in mind. A mechanically capable owner or technician should be able to handle most routine repairs in the field, in a shop, or even in a well-equipped garage.

Common service items include:

Chains
Sprockets
Bearings
Water swivel assemblies
Advance mechanism components
Clutch adjustments
Other common wear parts

Many of these components are standard, nonproprietary parts that may be available the same day from local bearing-supply or power-transmission suppliers.

Prairie Dog also stocks replacement parts for its machines and provides a parts manual with every machine. Manuals are available online, and customers can call for help identifying parts by description, part number, or even a photo sent by text.

Honda engines are known for straightforward maintenance, and the transmissions used on the 900TW, 1200TW, and 1800TW are extremely durable. In most cases, they require only routine oil changes and occasional clutch adjustment.

Prairie Dog machines also include a one-year limited warranty for the original purchaser, subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the operator manual.

Our goal is simple: build dependable machines that customers can understand, maintain, and keep working.
