It’s great to get out of the office! The UPEA team recently traveled to Mackinac Island for a renovation project at the historic Fort Mackinac. The project will provide universal access to public toilets in the Soldiers Barracks and infrastructure improvements, while preserving historic features of the structure. UPEA’s multi-disciplined team includes survey, civil, electrical, mechanical, and architectural design. UPEA is recognized by the State Historic Preservation Office as an experienced historic preservation design firm.

We bid farewell to Jim Koskiniemi, who retires from UPEA after twenty years with the company. Jim has been a respected leader and successful project manager. Thanks to his mentorship, UPEA’s clients are in good hands with the next generation of leaders. We are blessed to have Jim and his wife, Gail, in the UPEA family. Our hope is for continued good health and good times for Jim and Gail in their retirement!

Jim says, “I have enjoyed working side by side with you, [and] I am very appreciative of all the support that I have received from the UPEA family in these varying roles. I am very proud of what we accomplished together as a team.”

The City of Houghton recently welcomed the luxury cruise ship, American Queen Ocean Navigator, the first large vessel to dock at the pier completed in 2022. UPEA is proud to be the engineer of this Placemaking Project, involving our team of civil, electrical, structural, and marine engineers.

U.P. Engineers and Architects, Inc. is very proud to be a part of this placemaking project located along the shoreline of the Keweenaw Waterway in City of Houghton, which was substantially completed this past year. It has already proven to be a new focal point for the City of Houghton events, providing a centrally located gathering space closely situated to the downtown of Houghton.

No matter the season- the views from the new pier NEVER disappoint.
