We see this often and felt we should make Jeepers aware when they’re doing their own changes.
The clean oil filter is the 2014 - up.
The dirty oil filter is the 2012-2013.
We often see the wrong filters being used which can cause major issues. If you have a 2012-2013 with the upgraded oil cooler you most likely need to be using the 2014-up oil filter. If you use a quick oil change place they’ll also most likely use the wrong filter because they don’t know you’ve changed the oil cooler.
The other issue we see often is on the 2014 - up filter has a post that snaps off into the housing. We often see this post breaks off in the housing and they just stick another filter on top and when the cap gets screwed down it just breaks the new filter also. This can cause major issues with plastic pieces in the oil passages which will cause major engine failures.
Always verify which filter is required and use the correct filter.
