From Experience to Ex*****on — MSP Terminal Projects

MSP Airport Terminal 2 Expansion in Progress — See How We’re Delivering

We are proud to be working on the Terminal 2 North Gate Expansion at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport—in close collaboration with Miller Dunwiddie Architects and Morcon Construction (Fridley) — to help bring their complex, high-visibility design to life.

As part of this expansion, our team is currently furnishing and installing all exterior glazing systems for four new gates. This scope includes a sophisticated integration of HWindow wood curtainwall and Kawneer 1600 aluminum curtainwall—carefully coordinated to deliver both the warmth of natural materials and the performance of advanced aluminum systems within a unified building envelope.

A defining architectural element of the project is the incorporation of custom sawtooth curtainwall geometries. These dynamic façade forms not only create a striking visual identity but also require a high level of precision in engineering, fabrication, and installation. Successfully executing this design demanded early design-assist engagement, detailed coordination with the project team, and a deep understanding of constructability within an active airport environment.

To meet the project’s performance and sustainability goals, the curtainwall system integrates multiple advanced glazing technologies, including:

Viracon high-performance insulating glass to support thermal efficiency and occupant comfort

Sage electrochromic glass allows dynamic tinting to optimize daylight while reducing glare and solar heat gain

Onyx photovoltaic glass contributes to on-site renewable energy generation and reinforces the project’s sustainability objectives

Working within the operational constraints of a major airport adds another layer of complexity, requiring careful logistics planning, phased installation strategies, and close coordination to minimize disruption while meeting strict safety and scheduling requirements.

Through proactive collaboration, technical expertise, and disciplined ex*****on, our team is helping translate the project’s ambitious design intent into a high-performing, buildable solution. The result is a façade system that will enhance daylighting, improve energy performance, and establish a bold, forward-looking architectural identity for Terminal 2.

Our current work at Terminal 2 builds on extensive improvements we have successfully completed at Terminal 1. We collaborated with Alliiance Architects (Minneapolis) and multiple general contractors—including Morcon Construction, Knutson Construction, and Sheehy Construction to bring their design vision for Terminal 1 to reality.

Delivered across multiple phased projects, each with its own team and coordination challenges, these installations required flexibility, consistency, and a deep understanding of both design and constructability. Nearly every system was uniquely engineered to bring the project vision to life:

Erie Architectural blast-resistant curtainwall with electrochromic glazing

Custom bent interior lakes wall curtainwall with patterned glass

All-glass guardrails at the central ticketing level

Custom elevator enclosures, escalator glass, and railing systems

Integrated glass wayfinding features and mirrored elements

Custom parking garage façade systems

Overcoming Airport Logistics

Delivering in an Active Terminal Environment

Our experience at Terminal 1 highlighted the complexities of working within a fully operational airport:

Restricted access and strict security protocols

Limited staging and material storage areas

Continuous passenger traffic requires carefully phased work

Complex material movement and installation sequencing

Through proactive planning, strong communication, and close collaboration with project teams and airport operations, we successfully navigated these challenges—ensuring safe, efficient delivery while maintaining uninterrupted terminal activity.

Reach out to us with your complex project design challenges—including those with demanding logistics—and our team will partner with you through design-assist and beyond to help navigate critical considerations and bring your vision to life

Collaboration in Action: Bringing the HCMC Green Building Vision to Life

We proudly collaborated with Wold Architects & Engineers and Kraus-Anderson Construction to help bring their design vision to life for the HCMC Green Building project in Minneapolis. This project involved replacing an existing exterior curtainwall system with a modern, high-performance glazing solution designed to enhance building performance, durability, and long-term reliability.

Our team carefully removed and disposed of approximately 3,796 square feet of the existing exterior curtainwall system, followed by installation of a new thermally efficient aluminum curtainwall system designed to improve performance and visual continuity across the building envelope.

The new façade incorporates the Tubelite 400TU High-Performance Thermal Curtainwall System paired with high-performance Viracon glass, creating a durable, energy-efficient glazing system engineered for long-term performance.

System features include:

• 2½" × 7½" nominal depth aluminum framing system
• 2½" aluminum pressure plates and exterior covers
• Thermal composite pressure-wall framing technology for enhanced energy performance
• Custom vertical profiles with coordinated horizontal covers
• Viracon high-performance insulated vision glass with advanced Low-E coating
• Coated spandrel glass with ceramic frit finish
• Argon-filled insulated glass units with warm-edge spacers
• Foil-faced / FSK taped insulation within spandrel zones

Together, these elements support improved thermal performance, daylighting, and long-term façade durability while maintaining the building's architectural character.

Overcoming Complex Installation Challenges

Renovation work on an active healthcare facility presented significant logistical challenges. Due to limited access around the building, conventional staging and delivery methods were not possible. As a result, nearly all curtainwall components had to be flown to the roof by crane, where our team carefully coordinated installation from above.

During the removal of the original curtainwall system, an unexpected condition was discovered. Once the existing frames were cut out, it was discovered that insufficient structural support remained at the floor slabs to anchor the new curtainwall system.

Working closely with the Engineer of Record, the project team quickly developed a revised structural solution that enabled our installers to weld new anchors directly to the floor slab, restoring the required attachment points.

Through strong collaboration with Wold & Kraus-Anderson, the revised design enabled installation to proceed safely and efficiently, keeping the project moving forward despite unforeseen conditions.

Design-Assist Expertise in Action

Projects like the HCMC Green Building highlight the value of early collaboration, technical problem-solving, and experienced field teams. From complex site logistics to unexpected structural conditions, we deliver successful outcomes by adapting quickly while maintaining quality, safety, and performance standards.

Whether creating a new glass and glazing concept or restoring an existing façade or system, our team is ready to help bring your vision to life. Through early design-assist collaboration and seamless coordination through installation, we apply decades of experience, precision engineering, and a solutions-driven approach to every project. We are here to help!

Integrated Building Systems at the Ramsey Water Treatment Plant

In collaboration with Ortel Architects and Magney Construction, we helped bring their project design vision for the Ramsey Water Treatment Plant to life by providing and installing a comprehensive package of exterior and interior building systems. This daylighting and glass and glazing installation required deep expertise in façade systems, safety glazing, daylighting integration, and life-safety coordination—core strengths of our team.

Each system was carefully installed to deliver long-term reliability, controlled daylighting, safety glazing, and fully code-compliant fire and life-safety performance required for a critical public utility facility.

With this installation, we had to coordinate timelines, installation phasing, and on-site sequencing to keep the project on schedule. With multiple façades, glazing assemblies, daylighting systems, and life-safety components intersecting throughout the facility, careful planning and collaboration were essential to maintaining project momentum while ensuring each system met performance, operational, and code requirements.

Kalwall® translucent daylighting system panels were installed to introduce diffused natural daylight without glare or excessive heat gain—an ideal solution for an industrial utility environment.

In addition to performance benefits, Kalwall panels are engineered to support occupant comfort and well-being by optimizing the quality of natural light. Using Museum-Quality Daylighting™ technology, the translucent panels diffuse sunlight evenly throughout the space, creating a balanced, glare-free environment that reduces visual fatigue and the physiological stressors commonly associated with artificial lighting.

The EFCO 5600 Series Curtainwall system was installed to provide a high-performance exterior envelope with long-term structural integrity. Kalwall panels were glazed directly into the curtainwall system, creating a seamless transition between translucent daylighting and vision glass assemblies.

Advantages include:

Engineered for wind load resistance and weather performance

Supports large expanses of glazing for controlled daylight and visibility

Accommodates laminated safety glass where required

Integrates cleanly with adjacent Kalwall panels for a unified façade

EFCO 402 storefront framing systems were also installed as part of the Ramsey Water Treatment project, supporting both interior and exterior glazing conditions within this municipal facility.

The EFCO 406X storefront system was installed in the area, providing flexibility and durability without the depth of a full curtainwall while offering a cost-effective solution.

EFCO D502 & D500 Door Systems were carefully selected based on interior vs. exterior performance requirements to improve energy efficiency, reduce condensation, and match storefront aesthetics.

We also installed the McKEON AC8800CP fire door with pocketed panels to meet stringent fire and life-safety requirements while preserving the large opening's flexibility. When open, the side-folding accordion fire door retracts neatly into the wall pockets, maximizing usable floor space and maintaining clean architectural lines.

With minimal headroom requirements, compact pocket door depth, and push-paddle egress, the AC8800CP allows the opening at the plant to remain visually and functionally unobstructed during normal operations—while providing a fully code-compliant fire and smoke barrier when deployed, delivering safety and design flexibility without compromise.

Projects like the Ramsey Water Treatment Plant reflect our depth of experience in delivering complex, high-performance daylighting, glass and glazing, and fire-safety solutions for demanding environments. From early coordination through final installation, our team brings technical expertise, collaborative problem-solving, and a commitment to quality, helping design teams turn innovative concepts into durable, code-compliant realities.

Design Intent Delivered through Integrated Systems at Carlson School of Management

We take pride in collaborating with leading architects and contractors to transform ambitious design concepts into high-performing, real-world spaces. A recent example is our work alongside BWBR Architects (St. Paul) and JE Dunn Construction (Minneapolis) on the auditorium revitalization at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management.

An Integrated Building Systems Approach

To achieve the desired performance, safety, and design outcomes, the project required integrating two complementary building systems—an approach we frequently employ on complex projects where a single solution cannot fully address all objectives.

By thoughtfully combining a high-performing vertically folding partition wall with a code-compliant fire and life-safety door, the auditorium now supports flexible programming, meets stringent functional and acoustic requirements, and preserves the original design intent.

Skyfold® Zenith® 60 Vertical Acoustic Retractable Wall

We installed a Skyfold Model Zenith® 60 vertical retracting partition wall, delivering a tested STC 60 sound rating to support multiple room configurations within the auditorium.

A standout feature of this installation is the custom mural applied directly to the Skyfold panels, featuring the University of Minnesota’s iconic “M” logo. The artwork was applied by Studio Graetz, allowing institutional branding to become an integrated architectural element rather than an applied graphic.

Skyfold Advantages for Carlson School of Management Auditorium

Superior acoustic separation (STC 60) for lectures, presentations, and concurrent events

Vertical-rising operation that eliminates floor tracks and preserves a clean auditorium floor

Flexible space planning that allows one auditorium to function as multiple rooms

Fully motorized system that enables smooth, effortless operation

Seamless integration of custom graphics without compromising system performance

Durable, reliable operation suited for high-use academic environments

McKEON® Accordion Folding Fire Door

To complement the Skyfold system and address fire and life-safety requirements, we installed a McKEON side-folding accordion fire door, Model AC8814CP, in a bi-parting configuration.

This system folds laterally like an accordion, allowing large openings to clear efficiently while minimizing required pocket space. The door is powered with a fail-safe design that automatically closes in the event of a fire alarm or power loss, maintaining required code-compliant fire and smoke separation with egress, providing a reliable exit path during emergency conditions.

McKEON Advantages for Carlson School of Management Auditorium

Code-compliant fire and smoke separation when required

Bi-parting configuration for wide, unobstructed openings

Compact side-folding design with minimal visual impact when stowed

Powered operation with automatic fail-safe closing

Proven performance in demanding educational and assembly occupancies

Through early coordination and close collaboration with BWBR Architects and JE Dunn Construction, our team helped translate their project’s design goals into a finished auditorium that performs acoustically, functions safely, and reflects the Carlson School’s identity. The integrated use of multiple building systems resulted in a flexible, future-ready space that supports a wide range of academic, event, and safety needs.

If you’re planning a project where acoustics, space management flexibility, safety, and architectural expression all matter, our team is ready to help bring your design vision to life.
