Luna County Emergency Management confirmed a tornado on the ground near Deming last evening, which triggered the NWS El Paso warning.

Golf-ball hail, flooding, and downed lines closed NM 9 and NM 80. Luna County has only four documented tornadoes since 1950.

Field confirmation is the first link in public alerting, and it depends on voice and data that keep working when the lines are down. Wishing Luna County a quick cleanup. Our team is in New Mexico this week for the emergency management conference.

Residents sheltered as hail, flooding and damaging winds swept through Luna and Hidalgo counties.

Today is the Great ShakeOut!

At 10:15 a.m. local time, millions of people practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." Most regions take part today, including the Southeast region (which covers Maryland and Virginia) and New Mexico.

A challenge for emergency managers and 911 centers: while you're drilling, test your backup communications too. If phones and internet are down, can you reach your EOC, your neighboring PSAP, and your field teams? Drills are the best time to find the gaps.

Register a drill (any day works):

Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills help people in homes, schools, and organizations worldwide improve preparedness and practice how to be safe during earthquakes. Register to participate in your state or country's drill at www.ShakeOut.org.

Happy 251st birthday to the United States Navy! ⚓

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy. 251 years later, Sailors are still standing the watch around the world.

From our home in Southern Maryland, Cogito Innovations is proud to support Navy and Coast Guard communications and C4ISR integration. To every Sailor, veteran, civilian and family member who makes the Navy work: thank you, and happy birthday.

Meet the Wanderer Pro.

When storms, fires, or floods knock out local internet and cell service, emergency teams still need to send reports, run maps, and stay in touch. The Wanderer Pro is a rugged, portable broadband kit that pairs a Starlink Mini with 5G and channel bonding. It comes in a waterproof (IP65) case with a detachable dish, GPS, and built-in edge computing.

We built it for emergency management, disaster recovery, search & rescue, and field command: anywhere the network isn't.

Want to see one up close? We'll be in New Mexico and Virginia this month. Message us anytime!

It's Fire Prevention Week (Oct 4-10). NFPA's 2026 theme is "Charge into Fire Safety," and it's all about charging lithium-ion battery devices safely.

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere in public safety now: portable radios, phones, laptops, drones, and deployable comms kits like the ones we build. A few minutes on charging habits at your next shift briefing or station meeting is time well spent.

NFPA has free tips and materials here: https://www.nfpa.org/events/fire-prevention-week

Thank you to every firefighter and fire-prevention educator out there this week.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week focus on lithium-ion batteries works to better educate the public about how to charge safely.

Our thoughts are with everyone in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. On Tuesday, county commissioners approved a local disaster declaration after flooding caused more than $17 million in preliminary damage, and officials expect that number to rise.

Thank you to the emergency managers, road crews, utility workers, and first responders who have been working around the clock.

The Doña Ana County Office of Emergency Management has opened its online damage assessment portal. Residents who wish to report damage to property or businesses as a result of recent heavy rainfall and flooding may do so by visiting donaana.gov/DamageAssessment.
