CTSi Powers U.S. Air Force Autonomous Air Combat Breakthroughs

CTSi is leading the charge in next-generation AI integration for the U.S. Air Force’s advanced fighter weapons AI program, delivering transformative capabilities that redefine autonomous air combat.

CTSi has developed a pioneering system that enables AI agents to directly interface with F-16C mission, flight control, and weapons systems—executing commands with exceptional precision and reliability. At the heart of this innovation is CTSi’s proprietary Mudbucket® technology, which seamlessly integrates AI-generated commands into legacy avionics including mission, flight control, and weapons systems computers. This advancement accelerates AI deployment across existing aircraft fleets, enhancing operational readiness without costly hardware upgrades.

Installation teams are currently outfitting six F-16C aircraft at Eglin Air Force Base with this cutting-edge system. The first aircraft installation will be complete in the in the very near term, followed by intensive ground testing. The inaugural flight of an AI-enabled F-16 is slated for 2026—marking a historic milestone in autonomous air combat development.

CTSi also played a pivotal role in the successful demonstration of AI agents on two XQ-58 Valkyrie aircraft. In this landmark test, the Valkyries flew in coordinated formation under the command of piloted F-15E and F-16C aircraft. CTSi developed the software enabling unmodified fighter jets to communicate with the autonomous platforms, translating pilot commands into machine-readable instructions for the AI agents. The mission showcased dynamic coordination using autonomous air combat capabilities.

CTSi continues to advance this technology in preparation for future demonstrations, reinforcing its position as a key enabler of AI-driven air superiority.

Coherent Technical Services, Inc. (CTSi) is proud to announce that one of our own, Tom Cavallaro was recently selected to be the Technical Director of the Aerial Refueling Systems Advisory Group (ARSAG), Inc.

ARSAG brings together a team of U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Army, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and allies from twenty nations to advance aerial refueling. ARSAG has served the aerial refueling community continuously since 1978. It is unique in that it is a not-for profit organization, and an international open forum dedicated to promoting the overall common good and the safety of joint military aerial refueling operations and aerial refueling systems. Additionally, ARSAG representatives promote and exchange aerial refueling innovations, developments, interoperability challenges, and lessons learned through military status reports, seminars, military and industry briefings, discussions, and exhibits which are highlighted at ARSAG’s annual meetings.

As Technical Director, Tom will assist the various ARSAG working groups in producing a wide array of documents including military specifications and NATO standardization agreements. Congratulations to Tom on his selection for this new role!

CTSi is very pleased to announce the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 selection for an Aerial Refueling Latch Indicator. The U.S. Navy uses a probe and drogue style of aerial refueling and the goal is for CTSi to develop a prototype sensing system that can positively identify when a refueling drogue is securely latched onto a refueling probe. This technology is critical for future unmanned platforms to confirm secure aerial refueling system connection for during operations.

The ONR SBIR is broken up into three phases. Phase I is 6-months long with an additional 6-month option to develop and refine an initial Aerial Refueling Latch Indicator design concept that converges on a final prototype design. Phase II is to produce a full up prototype design and prototype as well as full up system hardware/software. Phase III is to update and finalize the system design based on system level testing and conduct full qualification testing. Success on this project will lead to transfer to NAVAIR for MQ-25 product use.

Aerial Refueling capabilities are vital for the power projection capability of our Carrier Strike Groups in contested environments and ensure our strike platforms can successfully reach their targets in the future fight. This is a fantastic opportunity for CTSi to deliver advanced operational capability to the fleet, enabling war winning solutions for the U.S. Navy.

CTSi is pleased to announce the development and successful testing of Constructive Wingman AI capability in partnership with Top Aces Corporation (TAC), and EpiSci. This innovative capability enables TAC F-16 aircraft performing the adversary air mission to spawn AI-Controlled virtual wingman, which can be seen as data link contacts on blue force aircraft displays, presenting a more formidable multi-aircraft threat for aircrew training.

CTSi leverages its unique Adversary Air Mission System (AAMS) based on patented Mudbucket® technology to allow the spawning, display, and control of this Constructive Wingman. CTSi also implemented Link-16 messages to report the positions of these virtual entities to blue force aircraft enabling more realistic training while limiting flight hours costs.
