🚧 TIGHT SITE? WATCH YOUR TAIL.
Not all excavators swing the same—and understanding the difference can help you choose the right machine for your jobsite.
This week’s Durante Equipment Field Guide #05 looks at Conventional vs. Zero Tail Swing Excavators.
A conventional excavator, like the Takeuchi TB230, has rear overhang beyond the tracks and needs additional clearance when rotating.
A zero tail swing excavator, like the JCB 45Z-1, keeps the rear of the machine within the track width—making it a great option when working near walls, structures or other obstacles.
✅ Consider available working space
✅ Check clearance around obstacles
✅ Think about what's behind the machine
✅ Account for the machine's swing radius
✅ Match the excavator to the jobsite and application
Neither design is automatically better. The right choice depends on the space you have and the work you need to accomplish.

💡 MORE LIGHT ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER.
For nighttime construction, simply flooding the jobsite with light isn’t the goal. Where you place and aim your light towers matters.
This week’s Durante Equipment Field Guide #04 looks at smarter light tower placement:

✅ Aim light where the work is actually happening
✅ Avoid glare for operators and workers
✅ Watch for shadows created by equipment and structures
✅ Consider the direction of the light
✅ Check the work area after dark for problem spots

The goal is useful, even coverage—not simply maximum brightness.
The takeaway: Don’t just light the jobsite. Light the work.
Need light towers for your next project? Durante Equipment carries Wacker Neuson light towers for rent across South Florida.

FRIDAY EQUIPMENT FUN FACT!

Did you know the skid steer owes its existence to… turkey p**p? 😂

Back in 1957, a Minnesota turkey farmer needed a small, maneuverable machine that could work inside his barns and help clean up turkey manure. Brothers Cyril and Louis Keller developed a compact loader to solve the problem — and that early machine eventually evolved into the skid steer we know today.

Who knew one of the most versatile machines on the jobsite had such a… humble beginning? 😂

Our hearts are heavy for the United Rentals family and, most importantly, for the families of the employees who lost their lives and the employee who was injured.

The equipment rental industry is a relatively small community, and while we may compete every day, we are still part of the same industry and share many of the same people, challenges, and experiences.

This one hits particularly close to home for me. United Rentals purchased my father’s business 26 years ago, and I also had the opportunity to work for United for a period of time. I have many personal connections to people who have been part of that organization over the years.

Today, competition doesn’t matter. What matters are the people and families affected by this tragedy.

From all of us at Durante Equipment, our thoughts are with the United Rentals team, the injured employee, the families who are grieving, and everyone who has been impacted by this heartbreaking event.

There are no words that can make a tragedy like this easier. We simply want our friends and colleagues in the rental industry to know that we are thinking of them and standing with them during this incredibly difficult time.

🏗️ BACKHOE OR EXCAVATOR? KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.
Both can dig—but choosing the right machine can make a big difference on the jobsite.
This week’s Durante Equipment Field Guide #03 breaks down some of the key things to consider when choosing between a backhoe and an excavator:
✅ Digging vs. loading needs
✅ Available working space
✅ Digging depth & reach
✅ Material handling
✅ Jobsite conditions
A backhoe like the JCB 3CX gives you digging and loading versatility in one machine. An excavator like the Takeuchi TB260 is built for dedicated digging, with excellent reach, precision and maneuverability.
The takeaway: Think about what you need the machine to do—not just what size machine you need.
Not sure which one fits your job? Give us a call and we’ll help you choose the right machine.
