Know your inventory. Control your fuel. Optimize your terminal.

On many terminals, gauging, loading and accounting run on separate systems. When a tank shows a loss, someone spends days reconciling numbers that never agreed.

Better measurement. Smarter tank operations.

Most decisions on a tank farm start with one number: the level in the tank. Receipts, transfers, overfill margins and reported inventory all depend on it.

Since 1976, L&J Technologies has focused on tank level gauging for bulk liquid storage: non-contact radar, servo and float-and-tape gauges, plus alarms, switches and overfill prevention.

For terminal and refinery engineers, the practical point is choice. Product, tank and accuracy needs differ, so the gauge should fit the application, not the other way around.

Shand & Jurs has built tank safety equipment for that job since 1922: conservation vents for normal breathing, emergency vents for fire-case relief, flame arresters to keep an external flame out, plus gauge hatches and fittings for safer access.

One detail worth knowing: the industry standard reference for vent leakage is 1.0 SCFH at 80-90% of set pressure. Expanda-Seal vents leak less than 0.5 SCFH at 95%. Less leakage means less product lost to evaporation.

Tank engineers at terminals and refineries: when did you last check if your vents leak just below set point?

The fastest way to destroy a level switch is to put it inside the process.
Aggressive chemistry makes the point better than any brochure. Acids and caustics attack wetted probes. Seals weep. Every vessel pe*******on you add for instrumentation is one more fl**ge to maintain and one more potential leak path to manage.

Microwave beam-break switches take a different approach: stay outside entirely. A transmitter and receiver mount on opposite sides of the vessel and detect whether the beam path between them is made or broken. The beam passes through materials that are transparent to microwave energy like quartz, Teflon, UHMW, fiberglass, and Lexan, so the sensors can work through an existing sightglass or a non-metallic vessel wall. No wetted parts. No coating, corrosion, or probe fouling. External mounting options detect without adding a vessel pe*******on.

Pressure is where this architecture earns its keep. Because the electronics never enter the process, the pressure boundary is the window, not the instrument. High-temperature glass window assemblies for the Microwave 320 are rated to 450 PSI at 70 F, and to 500 F at atmospheric pressure — several times the operating-pressure ceiling typical of microwave switch hardware in this class, where the electronics themselves carry the process rating.

Even better, availability now matches the engineering: we have stocked the key components behind every Microwave 320 build, so lead times across the whole line are shorter — often shorter than the incumbent’s replacement quote when it is time to swap a failing switch.

False alarms are how chute protection dies. Falling material momentarily blocks the beam, the relay chatters, operators stop trusting the alarm -- and eventually someone bypasses it.

The Microwave 320 separates falling product from a real plug with independent make and break time delays, adjustable from 50 milliseconds to 30 seconds. The relay only speaks when it is sure -- and it speaks twice, through a DPDT output that drives two circuits at once.
