I want to give a shout out to my hubby Ed. He recently assisted a customer in dealing with a local dealership regarding a warranty issue. He is so smart and facilitated a good outcome for the customer after a month long wait. He’s continuing to monitor the outcome as it’s not complete yet. With over 50 years in this business, no one can pull one over on Special Ed! 😊

Almost everyone at sometime has had that pesky little YELLOW light in their instrument panel that says Check Engine or maybe Service Engine Soon, sometimes just Check and an engine symbol. Don't confuse that with a RED light that says engine, these are very different things. The RED light indicates either a lack of oil pressure or an overheated engine, either of which is certain death for your engine if you continue to drive. The YELLOW or AMBER check engine light can be caused by many factors from as simple as a loose gas cap to expensive and complicated engine control sensors. Most of these things will have some affect on the performance or economy of your vehicle. You may not notice any symptoms except the light and it will not cause damage to your engine. The exception is when the light is flashing. This indicates an engine misfire serious enough to damage the catalytic converter. If the converter is damaged replacement costs range from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand of dollars. The moral of the story is you need to address a flashing light immediately to prevent damage. Where as you can continue to operate your vehicle with a check engine light on that is not flashing until convenient to get service.

Ever wonder why people harp at you to keep air in your tires and why do the manufactures have tire pressure monitoring systems now? Just think back to when you were a kid trying to ride your bicycle with low tires and the extra effort it took. It's the same thing your car has to do, lots of extra effort = more gas! Usually on the driver's door opening on the side, there is a tag with tire information which is easier to read than the tire itself.

One of the most important things you can do to prevent expensive repairs is to regularly change and use long life antifreeze. This prevents electrolysis in your cooling system which causes coolant leaks by eating away your gaskets and the sealing surfaces of your engine. Follow the manufacturers recommended intervals which you will find in your owners or scheduled maintenance manual.
