Happy Easter everyone! I was playing around with AI yesterday trying to get a picture of my Matsuura Tiger in a fully restored state. Guess I need to work on my prompts. Thank you to all my customers and supporters. I hope everyone enjoys a perfect Easter day!

The Story of Soft Jaws Continues!

Last week I got to make this set of parts that I just think are so cool and I am very proud of! These guys are about 2x3.5x5". Other than the fact they have a nice finish and work as they are supposed to. I am really happy how nice the 5" deep bore finish turned out on the inside. Which of course I forgot to take a picture of 🤦‍♂️. I also liked how the soft jaws I created made it really easy to put in the holes on the 20 degree surfaces into the through bore.

Overall a very fun part to make. I never know what Pharmamed Automation Inc. will throw at me next. I can give you guys a hint though. This week I worked on another really fun part. Next week I plan to write a post about that one. It includes more fun with angles!

I think this concludes the story of soft jaws, but part of me wants to find a way to post about them next Wednesday too. Just to keep it going

Good ole Soft Jaws

Sometimes, it is best just to idiot proof things. The last time I was making the part below, I had a couple of them that ended up a little wonky. I did not have them in truly perpendicular to the spindle. The post that is created at the top was off center and not within tolerance. This second batch has 128 parts. I do not want to be kicking myself later when one turns out messed up. Sometimes, it is better to just idiot proof things!

The second picture was the pile of stock I started to rip through last weekend. The Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. Tiger has been humming along making beautiful parts. Stay tuned. I will be posting some finished products here soon.

Here are some cool parts I had been working on at Pharmamed Automation Inc. One thing I love about machining is the variety.

We have here what I call the batarang and the coolant cup 3000 as the big pocket loves to fill up with cutting fluid.

Fun with fixturing!

Working in small batch job shops for most of my career, we tended to very low quantities. Normally 1 to 10 or so. Quantities like that don't often require fixtures to run lots of parts. Well Areté Manufacturing LLC has a job coming up here soon with a quantity of 500 pieces.

Not wanting to hand load 500 pieces individually I designed this fixture below to hold multiple parts at a time. I will also have 2 of these fixtures. Being able to swap the fixtures out instead of individual parts will reduce time between cycles. Letting the machine be running while I take off the individual parts.

I am super excited for this project! The Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. Tiger is going to put its reps in on this job.

IMTS 2024

I had an amazing time in Chicago this last week attending IMTS. I am sure plenty of my fellow LinkedIn connections did the same.

Taking pictures at events and of things I find interesting is a weak spot of mine so I don't have a bunch of cool pictures from the show. I do have memories that will last a lifetime.

It was awesome being able to travel and enjoy the show with my good friend Ryan Sorkness I enjoyed meeting up outside the shop with Eric Voightman and Josh Berg. I always get a thrill out of seeing old friends at the show. Tobias Flood from Metal Trade Solutions LLC it was great catching up with you. Mark Tuhy and Luke Mathias from Mathias Die Company, it was great getting lunch with you guys and catching up. The guys from Leister Custom Machining were there. I hope you guys got the information on those machines you were looking for. It was awesome catching up.

Josh Berg being the great guy that he is was able to get me a seat on Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. customer appreciation cruise on Wednesday night. While hopefully I will be able to participate in events like this again, it was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. The whole thing was super fun and we had an amazing view of the Chicago skyline from the boat. Everyone from Matsuura is super friendly. It was an honor to get to take a picture with Mr. Matsuura himself on the show floor. The fact that I have a 33 year old Matsuura that still makes excellent parts, speaks volumes about the quality of their machines. While I love my old Matsuura tiger, I am looking forward to the day I can upgrade to one of their MX machines.
