Some car guys grow up around Mustangs, but for Benjamin, the connection runs a bit deeper. His mom owned several of them back in the day, including the 1966 coupe he stood next to while home on leave from the Navy more than 25 years ago. That shared history is why he spent roughly a decade scouring Craigslist up and down the East Coast for a solid Fastback that wasn’t completely eaten away by rust. In April 2013, a 1965 A-code popped up just an hour from his house, only to vanish from the site that exact same day. He told his wife he couldn't believe he'd missed his shot after years of hunting, but fate gave him a second chance when the car resurfaced later that summer. This time, he didn't hesitate and bought it sight unseen.

Underneath the black paint job, which a previous owner sprayed over the original Rangoon Red before leaving the car sitting on blocks for over two decades, there was plenty of work waiting for him. Benjamin got straight to it, pulling the engine for a full rebuild and swapping out worn components, including a fresh headlight switch from CJ's to get the electrical back in order. Fast forward through a front suspension overhaul completed a couple of years back, and that once-abandoned Fastback is back on the road where it belongs. The engine bay looks like a completely different world compared to the day it arrived in his driveway, proving that a ten-year search and a lot of garage hours were worth every single second.

A flicker of chrome, and then... nothing.

Seeing a Mustang on the road is normal. But seeing a pristine classic parked right at the edge of where the asphalt ends and the endless desert begins? That’s different.

It sat there at the dead end of the street, perfectly still under the desert sun. A few minutes later, it turned around and disappeared into the dust; likely never to be seen again.

Did we just photograph a ghost car, or did the desert just take it back?

Art piece trapped in time!

In early 2005, Rodger walked into his local Ford dealership to order a brand-new Torch Red GT, only to find out high demand meant his order was pushed back to the next model year. Unwilling to sit on his hands, he took to eBay and found the exact spec he wanted sitting on a lot in Chattanooga, Tennessee, complete with red leather interior and the Shaker 500 sound system. After taking a half-day off work, helped along by a boss who had a '66 Mustang sitting in his own driveway, Rodger called the dealer to make sure it was still there. He hitched up a friend's Featherlite trailer, packed an overnight bag, and made the non-stop drive from South Carolina to Tennessee, pulling into the lot right before closing time.

When Rodger started looking the car over, he immediately noticed a few things were off, like missing brushed aluminum sill plates, a blank horn button, and no factory floor mats. A quick glance at the window sticker solved the mystery: where the MSRP normally sits, it read "Vehicle not for sale." The GT had been bounced around between dealerships as an unreleased promotional car before the official launch, which explained the missing trim pieces and unique paperwork.

Skipping the test drive to get the deal done before the doors locked, Rodger loaded the Mustang onto the trailer and parked it safely in the dealer's locked lot for the night. Today, that rare piece of pre-launch Ford history sits in Rodger's garage with just over 4,000 miles on the clock.
