Shielding gas does more than protect the weld puddle. It can also affect arc stability, spatter, bead appearance and overall weld performance.

For mild steel, a 75% argon and 25% CO₂ blend is a common choice because it offers good arc characteristics and minimal spatter. Straight CO₂ can be a more economical option, although it may produce more spatter and a less stable arc.

For aluminum, 100% argon is commonly used. Stainless steel applications may require a different blend based on the wire, equipment and transfer method being used.

The important takeaway is that there is no universal gas for every job. Base material, filler metal, material thickness, transfer mode and machine recommendations should all be considered before selecting a shielding gas.
