On June 22, 2022, Roberts Engineering Group, LLC accepted the NJ Society of Professional Engineers Project of the Year Award for the Allentown Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade project. The original Plant had severely deteriorated trickling filters and clarifiers, undersized sludge holding tanks, and abandoned rotating biological contactors and sand filters. Roberts Engineering Group designed and administered construction of the full Plant replacement which included a complete electrical upgrade, expansion of the existing clarifiers, a new grinder and mechanical fine screen, a new sludge holding tank, new pump stations, and a state-of-the-art integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system. The Federal EPA has described IFAS as an innovative and emerging technology. This is the first time this system has been implemented in New Jersey as a primary source of treatment whereas most applications utilize IFAS for supplemental treatment. IFAS provides intensified treatment at the Boroughβs Plant which allows for greater treatment capacity with a smaller footprint.
The design phase commenced in 2018 and construction was complete in 2021 at a cost of approximately $4.5 million with funding through the NJ Infrastructure Bank.
