Sylvia caught a bad case of Moose Brain this September, resulting in a pig pile of dishes in the sink and a very quiet Mud Bay Lumber Company page. Luckily, Chad picked up the slack and Mud Bay Lumber Company Headquarters has been anything but quiet.

Check out the photos and captions for a glimpse of all the activity.

Chad and Sage testing out the "Wiggly Power" of a spruce 1x2!

We are constantly amazed by Alaska's State Tree, Sitka Spruce. We take advantage of spruce's bounciness and strength in all sorts of ways, both playful and practical.

Have you met Judy San yet? Prepare to get your socks knocked off.

Judy found Haines on a cruise ship and the rest is history. She made a topographic model of her site plan and future house. She has a line set up where she patiently hooks rounds of wet willow and pulleys them out of the way, one at a time. She is carrying all her boards down a trail to her building site. And she is taking it on solo! (Well, not completely solo, she has her beautiful white pal pictured in photo no. 1).

Blades warp when they get hot. They then get sent USPS to Oregon to be rehammered. We sure are grateful for our hard-working post office crew! They put up with our heavy packages and get us our blades so we can get you your boards.

Now's the time to place an order for birch. Chad and LucyAnne have been sorting birch logs in the hot sun, getting everything ready to head to the band saw.

We sell birch straight off the mill for $2.50/bd ft, but the price jumps to $4/bd ft once we sticker and store it.

These trees were winter logged when the sap was down. They will need to be stickered and dried appropriately before being ready for most interior uses.

Funny story:

***

The office was the only structure in our life protected with siding. It looked great. It kept our kids dry and our books in order. It gave us a smile when we came to work in the morning. It represented progress.

Well, a series of miscommunications led to those beautiful siding boards getting painted with 80-90wt gear oil instead of shingle oil.

Yes, you read that right. Gear oil.

After an appropriate stream of curses, tears, bickering, and laughs, we toughened up and made the decision to take it off. It took most of the day.

Then, Chad milled more siding. Sylvia picked up a brand new window. The new boards are nailed in place, drying, ready for a new coat of shingle oil. By early next week, we'll be farther along than we were in the first place.

***
Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards. We go up, down, and round and round before we see forward progress. But little by little, we’re seeing a sawmill go up, down, round and round before our eyes. And every month, somehow we get a little farther along then the month before.
