While taking a Road Scholar tour to study the geology of Yellowstone we stopped to watch a herd of bison near the road. It was the beginning of their mating season and the bison were very active. This bull headed right toward us and I snapped a few pictures before retreating into the van when he got too close. — in Devils Den, Wyoming.

We’ve changed our picture to this year’s Brillig Calendar cover photo, taken by Mary Conwell. Here’s some background on the photo:

"The photo was taken in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa last spring. Leopards are the most elusive of African cats. Unlike lions, they are solitary, hunt at night and spend much of the daytime in trees where they seem to be able to sleep on any configuration of branches without a problem. They drag their kill into the tree as well so they are rarely seen. This female was either pregnant or had just enjoyed a rather wholesome meal. We were fortunate to spot 3 different leopards during our stay thanks to an amazing guide who seemed to have animal radar."

We’ve changed our cover picture to the Brillig Calendar November photo taken by Paul Brandenburg. Here’s the story of the photo: “This photo was taken while on vacation in September of 2011 in Yosemite National Park. While my wife and I were traveling up the coast on Highway 1 in northern California, we decided to take a few extra days for a first time visit to Yosemite. While hiking along the valley floor; we just happened to cross “Stoneman Bridge”. The day was perfect for capturing this image showing the Bridge and reflection in the Merced River using my compact Olympus XZ-1. “

We’ve changed our cover picture to the Brillig Calendar October photo taken by Dave Adler. Here’s the story of the photo:
Linda and I finally took a road trip through Alaska during August 2012. We made the scenic drive through Denali National Park. It was an all day activity in one of the largest parks in the USA that includes the highest peak, Mt McKinley. The 180 mile round trip took us deep into the center of the park over winding and narrow dirt roads. We were rewarded with a wonderful crisp but sunny fall afternoon in the park. The fall season had decided to arrive early in Denali National Park and the tundra was ablaze in bright reds and oranges. The numerous wildlife were particularly active as they were out preparing for the upcoming harsh winter. We had many wildlife sightings including moose and grizzle bears. The following week, the short fall season was over in the park and the winter snows had begun.
