What is Low Impact Development (LID)? Visit Poe West to see the various ways in which this approach was used.
✅Landscaping planters and sunken grass lawns receive and store runoff via rain chains and convey it through historic drainage culverts.
✅A pervious concrete parking lot and multiple subsurface gravel dry wells were used for subsurface runoff storage and water quality treatment.

Lawrence Halprin was commissioned to create the first Main Street streetscape plan in 1976 which started the transformation of downtown Greenville. His plan included removing the outer two vehicular lanes and replacing them with angled parking, adding wide sidewalks suitable for added pedestrian space and outdoor dining opportunities, and planting numerous large trees in raised planter beds. Our firm was retained by the City of Greenville and tasked with implementing Halprin’s vision in the 300 block of N. Main Street.

We worked closely with city staff to road diet the western side of this short section of roadway, add angled parking, and essentially mimic the same design concepts employed at other locations further south along N. Main Street.
