Recently Keller Grain and Feed, located North East of Greenville, Ohio, installed a new septic system that was designed by Mote & Associates. The Presby septic system can handle up to 300 gallons of sewage per day and is controlled by a dosing pump that regulates the flow into the leach system evenly. Mote engineers worked with the owner, Cristoph Keller, to learn the requirements that the system needed to meet and selected the Presby system as the best system design suited for the soil and topographic conditions. Mote worked with the Ohio EPA to get the system permitted for installation and the system is now up an operating. Give Mote a call if you are in the market for a commercial septic system!

Balsa Wood Bridge Competition
February 28, 2025
In commemoration of National Engineer’s Week (Feb. 16-22, 2025), the Engineering Tech Prep Class at Greenville High School held an annual competition involving the construction of balsa wood structures. The seventeenth annual competition partnering with Mote & Associates was held on Friday, February 28, 2025. In the past, bridges, boom cranes, and earthquake resistant multi-story towers have been constructed of balsa wood. This year, balsa wood bridges were built to support the weight of sand in a bucket suspended from the bridge deck. Sand was added to the bucket as each bridge was connected to a platform base until it collapsed. The structure holding the most weight with the highest efficiency won the competition. Efficiency was calculated by dividing the weight held in the bucket by the structure’s weight.
Opening the event, Greenville Mayor Jeff Whitaker read and presented a Proclamation professing the week of Feb. 16-22, 2025 as National Engineer’s Week in the City of Greenville. Other guests present included:
• Mike Bowers, Darke County Economic Development Director
• Denise Elsas, Darke County Economic Development Workforce Specialist
• Randall Bowman, GHS Career Tech Advisory Committee
• Bob Brown, GHS Career Tech Advisory Committee
• Corey Schmidt, GHS Career Tech Advisory Committee
• Jerry McClannan, Mote & Associates, Inc.
• Nathan Miniard, Mote & Associates, Inc.
• Brian Mitsch, Mote & Associates, Inc.
• Jake Subler, Mote & Associates, Inc.
Engineering Tech Prep Teachers, Mike Manix and Joshua Moore, determined the guidelines for this year’s competition. Classes of junior and senior students including 29 students on 8 teams were instructed to build bridges of balsa wood. Jerry McClannan, Nathan Miniard, and Brian Mitsch of Mote & Associates were able to mentor the students as they began preparing their designs on Monday, February 24, 2025.
On the morning of the competition, each team completed the construction of their project design. The competition took place at 12:30 P.M. The winning teams were:
• First place structure with an efficiency of 38,265% – Ryan Burrowes, Shyanne Gibboney, Tryston Good, and Kevin Nguyen.
• Second place structure with an efficiency of 34,409% – John Barr, David Conway, Aiden Manix, and Jack Suter.
• Third place structure with an efficiency of 33,436% - Ashton Kincaid, Luke Kiser, and Trey Rammel.
The winning team will receive certificates and gifts from Mote & Associates.

The team at Mote & Associates is working with the Dark County Park District to make structural improvements, upgrades to the turbine drive system and mill run at the historic Bears Mill. Payton Setser, a construction manager at Mote, is working with Sophia Nieport, the Mill Manager at the Bears Mill to assist Chris Garber, the Project Manager for H&M Precession Concrete, the prime contractor on the project. Chris’s team is adding reinforcement structure to the floor joists at the mill as well as pouring support column piers and adding concrete to the mill-run bed. This is a big undertaking that has required the installation of two temporary coffer dams and the pumping of water to allow the work to be completed. Mike Henderson, one of the former owners at Mote & Associates, is assisting with some of the design work and communications to complete the project. The project will be taking place for several weeks during the late winter and early spring. Look for further updates as the project progresses.

Mote & Associates has been blessed with the recent addition of student interns Ashlyn Gearhardt and Deanna Rodeheffer. Both ladies are high school senior students attending the Upper Valley Career Center in the Pre-Engineer and Design Technologies program. Mote was able to work with the program director Jeremy Kettering, to gain access to the talent available at the school. Both honor students are taking advanced technical based coursework at the UVCC and also attending Edison Community College to gain college credits. Ashlyn attends the UVCC through Piqua High School, and Deanna through Fort Loramie High School. The ladies are both student athletes where Deanna just “retired” from her state championship volleyball team and Ashlyn is a cross-country runner, track and field participant, and swimmer.
