Founded in 2021 by Nate Kohlenberg, KOHLTEC was created to provide manufacturers with practical, high-quality automation and controls engineering solutions backed by real-world industry experience. What began as a small engineering and consulting business has grown into a full-service industrial automation company focused on helping manufacturers improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.

For the past three (3) weeks KOHLTEC has been teaching hands-on FANUC robotic skills at First Solar PGT in partnership with Custom Training Solutions. First Solar is a great example of an organization investing in its employees to grow their technical skills and improve operational efficiency. KOHLTEC not only provides engineered solutions and service, but also workforce training to ensure your personnel are equipped with the skills to maintain and repair your automation and industrial robotics equipment!

These photos are from a customer site where multiple components failed due to overheating.

What's important to note here:

- This robot had preventive maintenance service performed just a few months prior

- The issue wasn't neglect -- it was a very harsh operating environment

In facilities with oil mist, dust, coolant v***r, or airborne debris, cooling fans and filters can clog much faster than standard PM intervals account for. When airflow is restricted, heat builds up quietly and over time damages critical components like:

- Power supplies
- Servo amplifiers
- CPUs
- I/O modules

With FANUC robot controllers, cooling fans are a first line of defense, but they can only do their job if they're clean and moving air.

So the takeaway isn't just "do PMs" , it's:

🛠️ Match your PM schedule to your environment.

Harsh environments often require:

- More frequent cabinet inspections
- Fan cleaning or replacement at shorter intervals
- Additional filtration or cabinet sealing solutions

Preventive mainteance isn't one-size-fits-all. It's about understanding how your process affects your equipment and adjusting accordingly.

If your robots operate in tough conditions, your PM strategy should reflect that.

This customer made the right call by upgrading outdated components instead of hunting down used drives with unknown history.

When legacy hardware reaches end-of-life, we recommend upgrading to proven, supported platforms like the PowerFlex 525, 527, or 750 series.

The result? Better reliability, easier support, and peace of mind knowing parts and service are available when you need them.
