JDI Contracts Inc. Engineering, fabrication, and construction. Connecting People, Solving Problems

JDI! Let’s talk about how we can help your business move forward.

Since 2003 we’ve been solving complex challenges with a hands-on, approach backed by decades of experience in finance, operations management, and technical support. As a leader in the industry, JDI Contracts helps industrial plant owners and operators navigate change—whether it’s expanding operations, meeting regulatory requirements, or upgrading outdated systems. Since 2003, we’ve been solving complex challenges with a hands-on, practical approach, backed by decades of experience in finance, operations management, and technical support. Founders, Roger Hoyum and Susan Gerchman, have been working in heavy industry and construction since the late 1980s. They built JDI on the foundation of real-world expertise—learning from the best, working with limited resources, and leading cross-functional teams to get the job done. Over the years, we’ve seen the industry change, with workforce shifts, globalization, and leaner operations impacting long-term growth and knowledge transfer.

That’s why we do what we do. We bring deep industry experience, technical know-how, and a commitment to helping our clients succeed. We understand what it takes to manage projects efficiently, minimize risk, and keep your operations running smoothly.

At JDI, we don’t just manage projects—we connect people, share knowledge, and solve problems.

Knowing your industry inside and out is essential—but what happens when the standard solutions hit a wall? 🚧

When facing supply chain delays, long lead times, or complex field integration, having experience outside of mining gives you a broader toolbox of answers.

Read our latest blog post to explore how cross-industry experience in mechanical engineering, controls, and project turnover helps keep industrial projects moving forward.

What can experience across heavy industry bring to mining? More expertise, more supply chain options, and more ways to solve difficult project problems.

Mining projects have their own demands, but a lot of the hard work will look familiar to anyone who’s spent time in heavy industry: coordinating disciplines, solving problems in the field, and making sure the finished system works for the people who have to run it.

That’s where JDI Contracts does its best work. We bring engineering, project leadership, and practical field experience together to keep complex work moving.

The last 10% of a project rarely gets the attention it deserves.

Checkout, commissioning, documentation, testing and punch lists aren’t the glamorous part of the job. They’re the part that determines whether a project is actually ready.

Nobody remembers how quickly a project reached 90%. They remember how it finished.

Anyone who works around industrial equipment knows a lot of the real work happens inside the control cabinet.

Controls, instrumentation, power distribution and field wiring all have to work together. Just as important, the layout needs to make sense when someone has to commission, operate or troubleshoot the system later.

Detail-heavy work, but that’s usually where reliability starts.

Throwback to when this one was still coming together.

A lot of piping, instrumentation, controls, and details packed into a pretty tight footprint. This is the kind of work we like: figuring out how all the pieces need to work together before it ever gets put into service.

Always interesting to look back at where a project started.

Big jobs have a way of making the equipment look pretty small.

A lot of steel, a lot of moving pieces, and plenty of work left to do. Just another day getting it done.

Not a bad view from the jobsite.

Let's be honest: No one moves their family just for a job title.

You move because the math and the life make sense.

If you're an Electrical, Mechanical, or IT Engineer in the Twin Cities or Duluth right now — you know what that looks like: higher rent, longer commutes, and feeling like a number.

So why consider Grand Rapids, MN? Here's what our engineers actually tell us:

• Your money works harder here. $80k-$125k base ($120k-$175k total package) plus Full Per Diem. In Grand Rapids, cost of living is noticeably lower than the metro — housing especially. It's not 2x, but it is the difference between renting and owning, or between a lot and acreage. That's real.

• You get time back that you can actually use. Lakes and trails aren't a weekend trip — they're your after-work. 25 Days PTO, WFH options, and no 45-minute commute means you're home for dinner.

• Your work actually gets built. At JDI Contracts Inc., you're not engineer #47. You're on AutoCAD, PLC Programming, real systems — PE/EIT track with projects that have your name on them. Small, experienced team (5-10 yrs exp preferred) where your experience matters.

• We don't pretend moving is easy. That's why we offer Relocation Assistance, 401k & Benefits, and a straight conversation first. No pressure, no corporate runaround. We know it's a big decision — we treat it like one.

This isn't for everyone. If you want big-city pace, this isn't it.

But if you want solid engineering work where you can afford to live well and be home — it might be worth a look.

We're hiring:

Electrical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer

IT Engineer

Crawl. Walk. Run.

It’s an approach Roger Hoyum, president of JDI Contracts Inc. has relied on for nearly 35 years.

Understand the problem. Get the fundamentals right. Then move faster.

Because skipping steps usually catches up with you.

See why Roger still uses this approach to lead teams and complex projects.

Just a couple of instruments getting ready to do some pretty important work.

Pressure, process data, control. Small pieces of a much bigger system coming together.

This is the kind of detail our controls and instrumentation team gets into every day.
