How do you drill a 40:1 depth-to-diameter, angled hole in 17-4 PH stainless steel on a standard vertical milling center? This peck and retraction cycle demonstrates a method to mechanically clear chips without high pressure coolant injection, preventing chip packing and tool breakage.

Our process included additional steps to address the challenges of angled entry, maintaining concentricity throughout the full drilling depth, and preventing drill whip during retraction.

CNC machinist Andrew Bogart (Andrew Bogart Racing) is a third-generation stock car racer. He, his stepfather, and his grandfather have been racing under number 54 since 1966.

This season, Andrew moved up to Pro Stock — and opening night at Crystal Motor Speedway - Crystal, MI was a statement. He finished first in his heat race, then drove from 10th to 2nd in the feature.
