The critical zone at the new GJT runway has been lifted to finished grade in the last two weeks. They've installed their splash pad and temporary slope drain as well. Look at how green the desert is from all the moisture we've gotten this winter and spring. What a beautiful day!

Photo sent to us by Kelley Trucking, the contractor doing dirt work on the new runway at the airport, showing nicely tracked slopes along the new drainage ditch. Surface roughening, or tracking, is an erosion control practice that provides temporary stabilization of disturbed areas until revegetation can be established.

Possibly our final update from Ted In Antarctica:

Ted actually got to go to South Pole! Typical surveyor too, he said it isn't really in the correct location according to his calculations 🀣 but the sign and ceremonial pole is already in place and no one wants to change it. Ted said it is very hard to tell in the photos, but the daily temps were actually around -50 degrees! You might be able to tell from the thick "freezer" door to the station that keeps the cold out and heat in, along with the photo of his co-worker who has frost growing from his beard, but compared to other photos we have seen we only can go off of the white desert in the background.

There are a few photos of the survey shack and other very interesting buildings that are for vehicle maintenance and monitoring. The giant hole they are digging is for the South Pole benchmark, Ted said they dug down 9 feet to get the monument set. He also included a few photos of the LC-130 ski plane that they rode over in, and said that the photo when they landed that shows the plane is a little after midnight! It looks like a bright sunny day! He said that the 24-hour daylight schedule was very hard to get adjusted to, and he is looking forward to returning home to seasons.

Ted has about 3 weeks left on his adventure in Antarctica. His flight home is scheduled around his birthday of February 27th, which he said he could get to celebrate twice due to the change in time/date with the different time zones. Ted is excited to return home to Colorado in a few weeks, where he will experience a heat wave and will probably be wearing shorts and a t-shirt while the rest of us continue to complain about the "cold" temperatures πŸ˜‚

We are excited to see you Ted and hear first hand all about your adventure on the ice. Safe travels buddy!
