The pilot fit is one of the most effective variables for reducing chatter. Choose it carefully.

A pilot that fits closely to the bore centers the reamer and significantly reduces its tendency to chatter. This applies whether you're running a solid or removable pilot — what matters is how well the pilot fits that specific barrel.
With a removable pilot system, you can fine-tune the fit for each barrel. With a solid pilot, the fit is fixed — which works well for standard barrel dimensions.

Carbide is harder. HSS is more forgiving. Knowing which one belongs on your bench matters.

Carbide requires rigid, high-RPM setups to perform properly. In the right environment — high-production shops with optimized machinery — it has real advantages. But in setups that aren't dialed in, carbide can be unforgiving, producing poor surface finishes.

High-speed steel, by contrast, is more tolerant of the real-world variables in a gunsmithing shop. It's easier to achieve a good finish. It's less expensive. It's more practical for most shops.
