You keep hearing about headspace. Here's what it actually is.

In most cases, headspace is the distance from the bolt face to the datum line on the case — the point where the case shoulder contacts the chamber. It determines how the cartridge sits in the chamber before the shot.
Too tight: the action won't close on a loaded round. Too loose: the case stretches excessively on firing, resulting in short brass life, inconsistent pressures, and, in extreme cases, case head separation.

You can check it with gauges. Three of them:
GO — action must close. If it doesn't, the chamber is undersized.
NO-GO — action should not close. If it does, the chamber is past what most of the industry allows.
FIELD — the reject dimension. Action closes on this? If the fi***rm comes out of service, the chamber is oversized.

If you're doing your own barrel installs, you already know the struggle of trying to hold everything steady while you work. The Barrel Vise solves that. Purpose-built for exactly this job and worth having in the shop before you need it.

Serious competition starts with a precisely cut chamber.
The Federal Gold Medal Match is one of the last qualifiers before the Finale. The shooters going to Carbon Hill this weekend aren't leaving their chamber tolerances to chance. Neither are their gunsmiths. Cut the chamber right the first time.

High-speed steel, carbide, or TiCN-coated? Here's how to pick the right tool for your bench.

HSS: More forgiving of less-than-perfect feeds and speeds. Better surface finishes on standard setups. Less expensive. The right call for most individual gunsmiths and low-to-mid volume shops. TiCN coating is a 0.0001"- 0.0002" layer of Titanium Carbonitride applied to an HSS reamer. Extremely hard, 'slippery' surface. At least twice the tool life of uncoated HSS. A smart upgrade if you're cutting a lot of the same chamber.

Carbide: Harder and longer lasting — but requires rigid, high-RPM setups to realize the advantage. Better suited to high-production environments.

The rougher takes the abuse so the finisher doesn't have to. The rougher takes the heavy cut — bulk material removal, fast- and leaves the chamber intentionally a touch undersized. The finisher comes in after and brings everything to exact dimensions: headspace, shoulder angle, throat geometry.

That sequence matters because a finisher that never has to take a heavy bite lasts a lot longer. The rougher takes the abuse so the finisher stays sharp, in spec across more barrels, and sustains a better finish. For a one-off build, you can get away with a finisher alone. There's a reason many professionals use roughing reamers.

Solid pilot or removable pilot? The honest answer: it depends on your needs and your budget.

Solid pilot reamers come with the nominal pilot already fitted, making the tool less expensive and ready to use in most circumstances. Removable pilot reamers use interchangeable precision bushings that let you fine-tune the fit to a specific barrel bore, which is a premium feature the solid pilot doesn't have.

Years ago, Manson sold about five solid pilots for every removable. That ratio is now roughly one to ten — partly because other piloted gunsmithing tools (indicating rods, form cutters) also use bushings, and a shared bushing set makes economic sense across multiple tools.

When you're supplying the most premium gunsmith tooling on the market, there is no room for 'close enough'. Every reamer we ship has been measured against the same ISO 17025 standard, whether it's going to a one-man shop or a major manufacturer.

That's the Manson standard. It doesn't change based on the order size.

One shot is all you get out there. The MXG Series holds zero through recoil, weather, and the pack-out. Built for the hunt that matters.
