For centuries in Europe and Asia masonry heaters were used to heat the home. They are still commonly used in these locations for the sake of environmental friendliness and continued tradition. Fuel to generate warmth has always been a precious commodity, and the attraction of a masonry heater is that it uses a minimum amount of fuel to produce a maximum amou

nt of heat. In a seemingly counter-intuitive practice, the fire in a masonry heater is not kept burning continuously, but deliberately designed to burn down quickly. The heater maintains a comfortable temperature for hours through masonry stored heat that radiates warmth. Owned and operated by Rod Zander, New England Hearth & Soapstone is dedicated to a powerful vision of this continued tradition backed by finely honed skills, and a strong personal connection as a former client himself. His profession took a turn when a home repair job, installing a masonry heater, led to the pursuit of knowledge about this traditional craft. Seeking out the best craftsmen and technicians worldwide Rod learned everything he could about masonry heaters, their interior mechanics, and how to adapt construction methods to comply with modern building codes. Along the way his engineering, stone cutting and design abilities, were honed and he became internationally recognized as a master craftsmen. Thirty five years ago Rod started New England Hearth & Soapstone LLC and has been building custom masonry heaters ever since. Notable amongst these custom heaters is the 2010 Vesta Award winning Helios. A wood fueled heater which warms the home with healthy, radiant heat, Helios set the standards for stoves designed using the EN 15544 industry standard.

The Firewood Association of Australia (FAA) called for an improved rating for wood heaters in the BASIX system following the publication of research conducted by the CSIRO in 2003 and 2012, which found that firewood produced less greenhouse gas than all other domestic heating options. The CSIRO findings are supported by accepted national and international protocols for assessing greenhouse gas emissions from biomass.

Prior to the change, wood heaters achieved the same rating as a 4-star fixed flue natural gas burning appliance in the BASIX rating system. With their new improved rating, wood burning fireplaces achieve a much better energy “score” than any other selectable heating option in the system including 5-star natural gas heaters, 6-star reverse cycle air conditioners and ground source heat pumps. Because the BASIX system provides a measure of both efficiency and greenhouse emissions, this new rating confirms that wood heating is not just good for the environment but is also the best way to minimize winter heating costs. We have the full winter supply of firewood in the woodshed,it is solar heated with good ventilation. The wood has been cut and split for one year, it will be super dry this winter.
We have next years wood cut and split waiting outside for the coming year.

I just picked up the mobile shop after it spent a week getting all of the brakes rebuilt. CT is hard on equipment with the liquid de-icing material they use on the roads. I have never worn out the brakes but have replaced all of the components every year due to rust.
It is good to have it back on the road and that it is Safe to use!
