As fall approaches, the days get shorter, and that means more exposure for emergency responders during low-visibility hours when secondary crash risk increases.

Firetrucks are often used to block traffic and protect responders on scene, but when an errant vehicle strikes a firetruck acting as a blocker, it can underride or snag on the truck's body, resulting in a more severe secondary crash. The damage to specialized firetruck bodywork and equipment can take months or years to repair, leaving departments to operate with reserve equipment or reduced capabilities.

“The MBT-1 provides a solid barrier that prevents vehicles from entering into the construction work zone despite potential distractions. Additionally, the system offers increased lighting uniformity, decreased shadowing in the work zone and decreased glare when performing heads-up tasks” wrote researchers.[1]

Nighttime highway construction work helps minimize traffic delays but is more hazardous for both passing drivers and workers. For passing drivers, nearly half of all fatal work zone crashes occur at night, and higher nighttime speeds are a factor in more than 30% of crashes.[2] For workers, FHWA research has also found that nighttime work zones are often poorly illuminated making work tasks more difficult and hazardous.[3]

Nighttime doesn’t have to mean more hazardous and difficult, however. Crashes in work zones result from many factors. Unpredictable zones require a driver’s full focus. In 2024, distractions were involved in more than one in eight fatal work zone crashes, reports FHWA.[1]

National Traffic Awareness Month is a reminder of both the hazard of high speed traffic as well as the opportunity to put safety first and ensure every worker returns home healthy instead of hurt at the end of the day.

A National Safety Council (NSC) survey found 58% of Americans working in construction feel that productivity or speed is prioritized over safety.[1] “The push to shorten project timelines can lead to compounding errors during construction... This push to go too fast and possibly cut corners can be combatted by a strong safety culture” wrote the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations.[2]

It is a reminder that prevention of serious injuries and fatalities starts long before work begins:

What is "Positive Protection"? Workzones with roadside hazards require extra safety precautions and physical protection for workers and the public. In one instance, a driver missed a turn navigating the work zone and plunged into a 40-foot-deep roadside trench. The motorist was found hours later by the work crew, extricated, and airlifted to the hospital.[1] In another instance, a car drifted onto the road shoulder and struck a 20 year-old worker in a trench, leaving him permanently paralyzed.[2]

It’s easy to see why federal regulations and ANSI Standards call for positive protection where roadside hazards exist, such as drop-offs or unfinished bridge decks.
