No matter the project, every worker deserves to come back safe.

The Mobile Barriers MBT-1® enables engineers and project managers to rapidly deploy Positive Protection to a wide range of work zones and projects that would otherwise be difficult to protect such as: short-duration projects, bridge & tunnel projects, moving work zones and mobile operations, incident management, and more.

Let's break it down:
🏗️ Short-Duration Work Zones
Occupying a location for up to one hour, these projects provide little time for work zone setup. Mobile, rapidly deployable protection such as the MBT-1® is critical so setup doesn't eat into your work window.

🌉 Bridge & Tunnel Work Zones
These types of work zones are often set up in confined spaces with no escape route for workers. Given the high-risk involved, physical barriers that separate live traffic from workers on all sides (front, back, and lateral) such as the MBT-1® are essential.

🔄 Moving Work Zones or Mobile Operations
Moving continuously or intermittently down the roadway, these activities need protection that moves with them. Highly mobile barrier systems such as the MBT-1® are built exactly for this.

🚨 Incident Management
When an incident occurs, first responders can be exposed immediately. Rapidly deployable positive protection such as Mobile Barriers ERB® can create a safe work area for first responders within minutes of arriving on scene.

🛣️ Long-Term Construction
Extended projects mean extended exposure. The minimal deflection of the MBT-1® helps reduce the number of buffer lanes required. Reducing the number and duration of lane closures with barriers such as the MBT-1® keeps traffic flowing and protects both workers and the traveling public.

📌 For a wide range of projects, Mobile Barriers MBT-1® offers dependable safety for your crew and integrated equipment to increase efficiency. The Mobile Barrier MBT-1® safeguards crews against vehicle incursions (front, back, and sides); reduces the number of vehicles and equipment on-site; enables rapid work-zone setup/removal; improves lighting and ambient conditions; and reduces project duration, thus minimizing roadway congestion. The MBT-1® is highly mobile and can be driven to multiple work zones within the same day. The Mobile Barriers MBT-1® provides 42-102 feet (12-31 meters) of positive protection with minimal deflection (tested and accepted under NCHRP 350 & MASH for TL-2 and TL-3 usage).

When it comes to protecting your crew, you need a proven solution.

The Mobile Barriers MBT-1® delivers:

✅ 42–102 feet of highly mobile Positive Protection with minimal deflection
✅ Tested & accepted under NCHRP 350 & MASH for both TL-2 and TL-3
✅ Federal Aid Eligible for use on the National Highway System (NHS)

What does TL-2 & TL-3 mean?

🔵 TL-2 — Accepted for lower speed environments up to 43 mph (70 km/h)
🔴 TL-3 — Accepted for the high-speed demands of interstates and major highways

MBT-1® not only met the NCHRP 350 & MASH criteria for high speed impacts - it exceeded the standards. The crash vehicle’s occupant risk values were calculated at only a fraction of the allowable limits and there was no damage or intrusions into the passenger compartment. And the crash test results speak for themselves:

"[The MBT-1® itself] did not experience any structural damage. The wall plates were not torn, punctured, or gouged. The test vehicle did not snag the wall panels and the vehicle impact did not create any snag points for future vehicle impacts. The only evident damage to the wall plates was aesthetic, where the test vehicle’s paint and tires made marks on the barrier. The wheels scratched the barrier, but the wall panels remained smooth.”

Your crew deserves protection that's been proven.

Recently, a contractor using Mobile Barriers MBT-1® on the Golden Gate Bridge gave a couple examples of work zone incidents. "[I]n one incident a car struck our MBT at night while working the crane from road deck hoisting below deck. When the Barrier was struck the working lights didn’t even quiver… If we had been working with standard K rail the crane no doubt would have been jarred…"

Drivers make mistakes. The MBT-1® ensures those mistakes don't have to be catastrophic.

"Mobile barriers require little to no setup and carry applicable power and lighting. They keep traffic moving at the zone speeds and reduce accidents. The Golden Gate Bridge Safety Net Project has saved two to four hours a shift by using mobile barriers which prevent delays and move traffic along" reported the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California.[1]

Reducing congestion benefits workers, motorists, and commerce alike, fewer accidents, fewer injuries, less delay.

The MBT-1® not only improves worker safety, it benefits everyone:
🛡️ Physically separates workers & motorists, preventing longitudinal and lateral crashes.
🚗 Helps errant drivers recover, in many cases, drivers regain control and continue on their way.
🚦 Reduces lane closures, work is focused in specific areas, no buffer lanes needed.
⏱️ Reopens roadways daily, easing rush hour congestion and reducing speed variance.
💰 Proven savings, California research found $1.9 million per year, per barrier in 2008 ($2.87 million in 2025 dollars).

Crews deserve more than just a cone between them and traffic.

When it comes to work zone safety, not all protection is created equal:

✅ Most Effective — Physical Barriers
Physical barriers are considered one of the best possible protection solutions for workers exposed to the flow of traffic. They don't rely on road users to comply. They just work.

⚠️ Less Effective — Speed Limits & Enforcement
These measures depend entirely on road users to comply. When they don't, workers pay the price.

❌ Least Effective — Alarms, Alerts & Cones/Barrels
These tools alert, but they don't reduce the hazard or protect. If a driver fails to respect cones/barrels, there's nothing standing between them and your crew.

The bottom line: Don't leave worker safety up to chance or driver compliance. Mobile Barriers MBT-1® provides the physical protection your team deserves.

🚧 Even a single intrusion into a work zone can lead to devastating consequences. For instance, in a posted 45 MPH night work zone, a passing driver dozed off and drifted into a lane closure at 70 MPH striking multiple cones. The vehicle continued unimpeded for 3 seconds, when it struck 41-year old Emilio and threw him more than 50 feet. "Co-workers and emergency response personnel tried to revive Emilio for over 30 minutes on the side of the road" recounted the California-based contractor in a CPWR webinar. In June 2021, the contractor joined in efforts calling on industry and roadway owners to update state standard specifications to deploy barriers between workers and motorists. [1] "We must work collectively and individually to ensure that Emilio, and the thousands like him killed and injured annually in our nation’s work zones, do not die in vain, but instead motivate us to do all that we can to be better." [2]

📊 Available data reinforces the importance of using barriers between workers and motorists [3]:
• In 2023, 176 pedestrians were struck and killed inside work zones and 40% of those incidents occurred in areas with speed limits of 45 mph or less.

💡 "It is difficult to change the behavior of motorists...But we can and must institute protective measures like positive barriers and other available controls" writes Laborers' Health & Safety Fund of North America.
