In June of 2025, a vehicle slammed into a scissor lift supporting 2 workers inside a tunnel work zone, throwing one worker 25 feet down to the pavement and the other clinging to a ceiling light fixture for over 20 minutes.

Work zones with aerial lifts are often risky because they give workers little/no means of escape. For this reason, Federal regulations require Positive Protection on projects that provide no means of escape.

The challenges of maintaining interstate highways are growing. As traffic increases, high speed roadways require more extensive repaving and repairs. Using positive protection, such as Mobile Barriers MBT-1®, increases workers safety and efficiency, as well as improves traffic flows.

For instance, after deploying Mobile Barriers MBT-1® on a concrete pavement restoration project on interstates I-80/I-94, INDOT’s representatives observed:

What is it?
The MBT-1® is a highly mobile, rigid-wall traffic barrier system. Its job is simple but vital: physically separate workers from live traffic, front, back, and sides so that when a driver makes a mistake, it doesn't cost a worker their life.

“Emergency responders are trained to be extremely careful and vigilant in transport and when responding to roadside incidents... Despite these precautions, however, the rate of these collisions in recent decades has remained relatively unchanged, with fatal consequences," reports Fire Apparatus Magazine.[2]

However, research indicates drivers actually need 4 to 6 seconds (the “6 Seconds Rule”) to fully adapt and recover control when forced to process unusual or complex information, such as a distracting or complex work zone.[1]

"Highway construction workers are often the unsung heroes of the nation's transportation system... The men and women fixing our streets, highways and bridges are among the most vulnerable road users" writes the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).[1]

These workers are heroes. Highway workers have also often doubled as first responders, credited with saving motorist and pedestrian lives, often while their own safety is in the balance. [2-10]

Every injury or death alongside our roadways is one too many. Behind every statistic is a worker who deserved to make it back home. Positive Protection exists to make sure more of them do.
