ITW’s commitment to Customer-Back Innovation (CBI) has helped shape our entrepreneurial culture and build a portfolio of over 21,000 granted and pending patents worldwide.

At the 2026 ITW Patent Society Dinner in Paris, France, earlier this month, we celebrated colleagues whose creativity and expertise led to patented solutions that create value for our customers and businesses.

During the evening, Harald Disch was inducted into the ITW Patent Society Hall of Fame in recognition of a 30-plus-year career helping Hobart redefine commercial warewashing through breakthrough advancements in water and energy efficiency, AI-enabled technologies, and customer-focused product development. With more than 108 patents to his name, Harald’s contributions continue to shape the future of innovation across ITW.

We also proudly recognized 115 new Patent Society inductees and 10 Distinguished Fellow award recipients whose inventive efforts exemplify the transformative impact of CBI.

As we continue to celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we’re sharing stories from leaders of ITW’s Asian Professionals Engagement Network (APEN). By building community, encouraging connection and championing inclusion, these colleagues are helping create workplaces where people from all backgrounds can thrive.

Meet Sandip Sura, electrical engineer at MTS Systems Corporation in Minnesota and co-chair of APEN's midwest chapter. Through his involvement with APEN, Sandip helps bring colleagues together through opportunities that encourage connection, collaboration and career development.

Q: When have you felt a strong sense of belonging at ITW? What made that moment meaningful?

A: Working with team members in Minnesota and our MTS India office to create a video showcasing our Diwali celebrations and sharing what the holiday meant to each of us created a strong connection between teammates across two continents. Colleagues I had never met before came together to celebrate an important cultural tradition, and it became the highlight of our APEN event.

Eight months later, I had the opportunity to meet some of those colleagues in India, and they welcomed me like family. That experience showed me ITW is more than a workplace — it’s a place where I can grow personally and professionally.

Q: What have you learned through APEN about leadership, culture or yourself that you carry into your everyday work?

A: Growing up, I was often the only person of Asian descent around me, so I tried to blend in and avoid standing out. Through APEN, I’ve learned to embrace and take pride in my culture and heritage.

Being part of a global enterprise has shown me that our unique backgrounds and perspectives are valued. Understanding different cultures helps us build stronger relationships and work more effectively with colleagues and customers from around the world.

When you open a loaf of bread, there’s an expectation it will look, feel and taste exactly as it should.

For food manufacturers, delivering that consistent quality at scale can be challenging—particularly with warm, moist products like bread, muffins and pancakes. Using ITW’s Customer‑Back Innovation Framework, the Loma Systems team worked to address the demands of these complex production environments. Through patented variable frequency and advanced technology, the IQ4M metal detector was developed to deliver reliable performance and stability, even with highly reactive food products.

The team then partnered closely with Genius Foods to put the system to the test in live production, ensuring the solution met real operational needs and integrated seamlessly into day‑to‑day processes. The result is an innovation designed to support manufacturers in maintaining high standards, protecting their brand, and optimizing production efficiency.

In celebration of European Diversity Month, we’re proud to introduce members of the ITW Multicultural Network (MCN). Founded by colleagues across Europe, the Employee Resource Group is dedicated to fostering inclusion for all ITW team members by celebrating diverse cultural backgrounds, supporting career development and helping attract Great ITW Leaders.

Meet Gugu Moyo, a thermal mechanical engineer with Instron in High Wycombe, England. Through her role as MCN's head of advocacy, Gugu is helping create a more inclusive workplace where colleagues feel valued, connected and empowered to reach their full potential.

Q: What does European Diversity Month mean to you personally, and why does it matter to recognize it at work?

A: It’s a time to be intentional about creating inclusive workplaces that empower everyone to thrive. Like many people, I’m living and working in a country I wasn’t born in but have chosen to call home. Initiatives like EU Diversity Month help people feel accepted and welcomed in their chosen home countries so we can all benefit from the richness of diverse cultures and experiences.

Q: What have you learned through MCN about leadership, culture or yourself that you carry into your everyday work?

A: I’ve learned that creating and fostering an inclusive culture takes all of us. We each have a role to play in speaking up, taking action and helping move progress forward. Our contributions matter, and I’ve found that I get more meaning when participating than watching from the sidelines. The many activities and initiatives happening throughout the year are driven by a diverse group of passionate people who are committed to creating a more equitable world.

We are proud to celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month by introducing members of ITW’s Asian Professionals Engagement Network (APEN). These colleagues are helping foster inclusive, welcoming workplaces where every team member feels valued and empowered to succeed.

Sophia Liu, lead technical support engineer at Instron in Norwood, Massachusetts, co-chairs APEN's East Chapter and plays a vital role in creating opportunities for all colleagues to learn, connect and grow professionally.

Q: What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you personally, and why is it important to recognize it at work?

A: AAPI Heritage Month is a time to reflect on my identity, history and the often-unseen contributions of AAPI communities. Recognizing it in the workplace helps people feel seen, respected and valued for who they are. It also encourages learning, empathy and a stronger sense of belonging across teams.

Q: What have you learned through APEN about leadership, culture or yourself that you carry into your everyday work?

A: Through APEN, I’ve learned the importance of resilience — embracing challenges and learning from them strengthens both personal growth and leadership. I’ve also learned that leadership means helping others do meaningful work by encouraging, supporting and amplifying their efforts. APEN has helped me feel proud of my culture and where I come from, and I carry that confidence into my everyday work as a source of strength and purpose.

Colleagues from our ITW Automotive Global Fasteners division in Les Franqueses del Vallès, Spain, marked World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28 with an interactive event focused on preventing hand and finger injuries.

Participants experienced the critical importance of their hands by completing everyday tasks with bandaged fingers, as well as learning how to choose, use and care for their PPE. Strong colleague participation reinforced our shared ownership for safety and the need to proactively identify and reduce risks.

Guided by our belief that all accidents are preventable, we remain focused on continuous improvement and fostering a culture where every colleague plays a role in creating a safer workplace, every day.

ITW innovations support the structures we rely on every day and the breakthroughs that push boundaries far beyond Earth.

Across segments and divisions, ITW solutions and services play a role in supporting and safeguarding NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration missions, including Artemis II. From advanced welding solutions that enable precise, high-strength components to X-ray inspection and O-ring leak testing technology that ensures the integrity of mission-critical parts, our teams are proud to contribute behind the scenes.

When the stakes are highest, colleagues from Brooks Instrument, Miller Welders, MTS Systems Corporation, North Star Imaging and across ITW are trusted to innovate valued solutions.

We’re inspired by what’s possible when innovation pushes the limits of possibility.

Since 2019, Instron colleagues have raised more than $125,000 for rare cancer research.

Participating annually in Cycle for Survival, which supports Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, has become a powerful, colleague‑led tradition that brings people together through shared purpose and action.

Blending energy, emotion and purpose, the experience reflects ITW’s entrepreneurial culture while empowering colleagues to make a positive impact in the communities where they live and work. “If you genuinely care about a cause, people can feel that,” says Matthew Spiret, Instron’s director of product marketing, who has organized the ride since 2019. “It stops being a corporate initiative and becomes something personal and meaningful.”
