Newcomb school will do project this summer

NEWCOMB -- Newcomb Central School will finally get its $2 million facelift this summer, after the project was delayed one year because of its cost.

The district will be redo its bathrooms to make them handicapped-accessible, put air conditioning in its auditorium and replace the septic system, according to Superintendent Clark Hults.

Voters originally approved the project in August 2012. The bids came back at about $500,000 more than budget for the project, however. Hults said the bids likely were high because construction companies committed to other projects by that point in the year.

The school board voted in June 2013 to hold off on the capital project. The cost was lower when school officials bid it out again in the fall, because construction firms hadn’t already lined up other jobs, according to Hults.

“Instead of being at the back of the line, we are at the front of the line,” he said.

Other aspects of the work include redoing brickwork on the front steps, replacing some of the concrete walkway and installing a new playground. The district will also replace the ventilation system throughout the building, one portion of which dates back to 1948, according to Hults.

Construction will take place during the summer break.

“We are hoping that everything will be done, and we’ll get the building open on time for Sept. 2,” he said.

Newcomb is looking to pay this project off in five years, which Hults said is a shorter time than usual for a construction bond. That will mean larger payments each year, but the debt will be retired quickly, he said. The district gets about 21 percent state aid reimbursement.
